    Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

    Experience: Three years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner, one year of which must have been with the County of Riverside or equivalent hospital or healthcare setting.

    Education: A Bachelor's or Master's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing, public health, health sciences or a closely related field; or a current certification as a Nurse Practitioner in a field of specialty by a recognized National Board is required. Certification must be maintained in order to continue in this level for those who do not have either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.

    Knowledge of: Techniques used in the diagnosis and treatment of personal health problems; principles of health maintenance and disease management; psychosocial assessment; normal growth and development; pathophysiology; pharmacology; nutrition; counseling and health education principles; healthcare delivery systems; community resources and referrals systems related to healthcare; legal implications of advance practice roles in nursing; principles of quality assurance.

    Ability to: Provide care to patients with acute and chronic health problems; collaborate with healthcare team, patients and families to identify and resolve health problems; write clear, concise documentation of patient visits in the medical record; provide independent nursing care; function under standardized protocols; communicate effectively orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, healthcare team and others; analyze situations accurately and take effective courses of action.

    Other Requirements
    License/Certificate: Must possess and maintain a current valid license to practice in the State of California.

    Responsibilities:
    • Take patient health histories; perform physical examinations; record findings and assess the health status of patients.
    • Identify abnormalities and/or concerns in physical, mental, emotional, developmental, and psychosocial functioning; order, review and interpret diagnostic and screening procedures.
    • Perform selected diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; follow orders for administering medications and therapeutic devices.
    • Provide health counseling and educate patients on specific areas related to patient illness/health status.

    • Refer patients for further diagnosis and/or treatment when indicated; identify patients who require immediate attention of a physician; initiate specified emergency treatment; carry out approved treatment plans.
    • Identify needs for continuing education of nurse practitioners, medical students, and residents, and make recommendations for meeting such needs; may present in-service training or staff development programs as designated by the supervising physician.
    • Participate in analysis of clinic concerns and work with other department staff to solve problems; collaborate with other department staff to modify patient record keeping requirements and forms.
    • Identify need for modification of standardized procedures for nurse practitioners and initiate collaboration with supervising physician to implement changes; participate in community activities on health-related issues.
