    Job Description

    The Process Engineer will be a key member of the high performing team focused on developing the next generation high volume manufacturing processes that will connect 24M’s revolutionary product to the high growth energy storage market. Primary responsibilities of this position include (1) Project support for the Advanced Research & Development (AR&D) Team in developing and optimizing processes to support new cell technologies; (2) Setting up and running Proof of Principle (POP) studies to support development efforts; (3) Support root cause analysis with the Operations Team. The Process Engineer must have demonstrated success in developing novel processes. Strong interpersonal skills are required, as area strong work ethic and the ability to flourish in a dynamic startup environment. The Process Engineer reports to the Battery Mechanical Design Engineer, High Energy Density Team within the AR&D Team.

    Responsibilities:

    • Lead and execute design and equipment projects to support AR&D needs; includes mechanical component design, equipment design/qualification, tooling/fixtures design to support existing and novel build processes. Conduct feasibility studies to find direction on novel processes.
    • Work closely with equipment design engineers and outside partners to successfully complete proof of concepts.
    • Perform equipment and process capability studies and make process improvements through experimentation and analysis.
    • Integrate process control parameters into manufacturing.
    • Serve as conduit between Advanced Manufacturing Team, Operations Team, and AR&D Team for process development projects.
    • Mentor associate engineers and provide training for new employees and cross training activities.
    • Perform other related functions as required to support AR&D.

    Required Skills and Experience:

    • At least 5-8 years of experience in a wide range of manufacturing processes.
    • Demonstrated ability and passion to understand processes and the interactions between material, equipment, and the associated impact on product performance. Mechanically savvy.
    • Demonstrated ability to design, optimize, and qualify pilot and production processes.
    • Ability to create methods to generate data where none exist and to turn art into science by getting the numbers.
    • Ability to use engineering judgment to make sound decisions with incomplete data. Can combine theory with empirical observations.
    • Strong problem-solving skills and a hands-on approach to troubleshooting.
    • Self-motivated, persistent, hands-on, and results oriented. Able to multi-task and stay organized in a fast-paced environment.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; able to communicate in a data-driven manner.
    • Works well in a cross-functional team with a willingness to share skills and information and mentor others.
    • Proficient in SolidWorks or similar CAD software.
    • Coachable; able to act on management inputs and constructive criticism.
    • Curious and excited about learning new technologies.

    Desired Skills and Experience:

    • Lithium-ion battery industry experience.
    • Experience with data analytics software (JMP, Minitab, Tableau).
    • Experience with standard Quality tools (PFMEA, SPC, DOE, Control Plans, NPD, Change Management, RCA).
    • Knowledge of processes such as mixing, extrusion, formation, etc.
    • Knowledge of coating technologies.
    • Knowledge of various laminating technologies, including, heat sealing, adhesive sealing, etc.
    • Experience in taking a process from lab scale to pilot scale, and to high volume manufacturing.

    Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Process Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field.

    Physical and Environmental Standards

    • Capable of working in a low moisture dry room environment as required: < 1.0% Relative Humidity (-50°C dew point)
    • Capable of wearing clean room attire when working in dry room environment: face mask, hair net, safety glasses, gloves, coverall suit and shoe covers
    • Capable of meeting OSHA standards for manual lifting guidelines: < 50lbs
