    DIESEL TECHNICIAN III

    JOB DESCRIPTION

    Summary

    As a valued member of our team, the Diesel Technician III will diagnose, adjust, and repair all series of motor truck and trailer equipment including, but not limited to the following: engines (gas and diesel), electrical/brake/cooling systems, transmissions (manual and automatic), clutches, differentials/power dividers, PTO systems, starters/alternators, air conditioning systems (including cold and hot units), fan clutches, engine electronics (gas/diesel), power steering systems, steering gear box (manual and power), hydraulics and welding.     Essential Duties and Responsibilities (including the following; other duties may be assigned)

    Perform all levels of preventive maintenance services on truck and trailer equipment.

    Diagnose, rebuild and repair fleet equipment (tractors, trailers, mixer units).

    Prepare work orders both manually and on a computer

    Identify warrantable repairs and document

    Maintain work area appearance and safety

    Work in a safe manner, per company, local, state and federal policies and regulations

    Identify and determine parts required for repair of disassembled units

    Perform minor welding

    Road test vehicles when necessary to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure that they are working properly.

    Raise trucks, and heavy parts or equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists.

    Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper operating condition.

    Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, and pressure gauges.

    Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices.

    Inspect and verify dimensions and clearances of parts to ensure conformance to factory specifications.

    Perform duties with little or no supervision and in a timely and efficient manner

    Specialize in repairing and troubleshooting of major components such as engine, transmissions and differentials, to include replacing or rebuilding complete assemblies, turbochargers, fuel system, after treatment, mixers, etc.

    Assist in training other employees, act as a mentor.

    Willingness to travel as necessary to close geographical locations

    Education/Experience

    6 years practical experience with tractor trailer maintenance required

    Proficiency in the use of all tools of trade (including welding equipment, diagnostic equipment, hand and power tools) required

    Proficient computer skills: knowledge of Excel, Word, Fleet Management Systems, and email

    Must be able to operate a manual transmission vehicle to determine if operating properly

    Must provide own tools and toolbox

    High school diploma or equivalent required

    Vocational/Technical or certification preferred

    Specialized training and experience in the diagnosis/troubleshooting of major components (engines, transmissions, differentials) or OEM training courses required

    Effective communication skills in the English language in both written and verbal form

    8 years of practical experience is preferred but not mandatory

    Language Skills

    Candidate must have effective communication skills in the English language in both written and verbal form.

    Certificates/Licenses/Registrations

    A valid driver’s license is required

    Current CDL license with air brake certification required

    ASE Certification and 608/609 certifications required (Master T preferred)

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

    This is a full-time position, and hours of work and days are subject to the shift assigned.

    Travel

    Travel percentage depends on business needs.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee is regularly exposed to wet or slippery ground conditions. Employee must wear required personal protective equipment; up to and including safety vest, hard hat, ear protection, gloves and safety glasses.

    Supervisory Responsibility

    This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities. However serves as a mentor to other employees in the apprentice program and as required.
