    ROLE SUMMARY

    The Assistant Superintendent – Paper Machine is a key member of the Paper Department’s management team that is responsible for providing overall leadership and ensuring excellent safety performance.  This role ensures the safe and efficient operations of either the wet end or dry end of a paper machine in an integrated mill.  This role reports to the Paper Machine Superintendent.

    Duties & Responsibilities (include but are not limited to the following):

    • Utilize and refine standard work systems to effect sustainable positive results in safety, environmental, people, quality, cost, and performance.
    • Demonstrate safety as a core value by creating a safe work environment where no one gets hurt
    • Ensure efficient operation of paper machine
    • Ensure all quality, and environmental processes and programs are followed
    • Lead development of direct reports and union employees toward implementation of a self-directed and reliability-focused organization
    • Confers with management personnel to establish production and quality control standards, develop budget and cost controls, and to obtain data regarding types, quantities, specifications, and delivery dates of products ordered
    • Plans and directs production activities and establishes production priorities for products in keeping with effective operations and cost factors.
    • Maintain costs within established operating budget and take responsibility for financial performance of assigned operation
    • Implement improvement strategies designed to: increase customer satisfaction, increase yield and operating efficiency, reduce cost, and improve reliability.
    • Enforce strict safety standards and practices. Be aware of existing safety hazards and make every feasible attempt to correct these hazards
    • Maintains equipment through assuring equipment basic care rounds are completed and operator maintenance is performed as required
    • Provide input on capital projects and strategic improvement plans.
    • Ensure communication of business strategy, goals, and initiatives to team members.
    • Leads continuous improvement projects for area of responsibility.
    • Collaborates with maintenance group to prioritize weekly maintenance and outage needs
    • Coordinates predictive and preventative maintenance activities.
    • Remain continually aware of paper machine quality requirements and work closely with the Quality & Customer Service teams.
    • Develop training material for the areas of responsibility.
    • Champions employees to continually look for ways to improve processes.
    • Reviews and analyzes production, quality control, maintenance, and operational reports to determine causes of nonconformity with product specifications, and operating or production problems
    • Develops and implements operating methods and procedures designed to eliminate operating problems and improve product quality
    • Revises production schedules and priorities as result of equipment failure or operating problems.
    • Maintain effective communications and working relationships with Operations Departments, Suppliers, Maintenance, Safety, IT, Environmental, Human Resources, Engineering, and Purchasing

    Required Skills

    REQUIRED CHARACTERISTICS

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Paper Science or related field with five years of operations experience within the paper industry including three (3) years of supervisory experience

        OR

    • Ten plus years of progressive and practical paper making experience including five (5) years of paper machine supervisory experience
    • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills
    • Demonstrated troubleshooting skills of the paper making process
    • Demonstrated ability to balance priorities to meet short and long-term objectives
    • Strong organizational skills with the desire to accept the challenge of working in continually changing internal and external business conditions
    • Proven oral and written communication skills
    • Working knowledge of the operation of an integrated mill
    • Proficient at managing, scheduling, and training multi-function teams

    Possess an entrepreneurial and innovative spirit, with a situational (servant, directive, collaborative) leadership approach to managing the team, as needed.
