    Job Description

    AECOM is actively seeking a highly motivated Botany and Restoration Intern for employment in the San Diego, CA office. This position would support numerous restoration, botany, wildlife, and environmental compliance projects in the southern California region, with a focus on restoration and botany.

    This part-time position is expected to begin April/May 2023, with an expected duration of 3 months.

    The responsibilities of this position include supporting technical work at project-specific work site locations throughout southern California. The primary job duties include general biological surveys, rare plant surveys, restoration monitoring surveys, electronic data collection and management, and assistance with preparation of technical reports.

    Additional duties may include assisting on projects associated with non-native and invasive species removal, post wildfire surveys and restoration efforts, implementation of best management practices including erosion control, data entry and management, or assisting with natural resources related field surveys.

    The responsibilities and duties of this position may include:

    • Working closely with a designated restoration ecologist and other biologists.
    • Working effectively independently when required.
    • Willingness and desire to learn restoration ecology concepts.
    • Develop a strong understanding of established best management practices.
    • Ability to work closely with restoration crews in the field.
    • Ability to follow and perform directions safely and efficiently.
    • Ability to work with a team to solve problems and have the confidence to ask for help when needed.
    • Participate in extensive field work during all types of weather including 100+ degree days (appropriate safety procedures, including designated breaks, will be implemented).
    • Ability to present oneself in a professional manner when interacting with members of the public or clients.
    • Collaboration with his/her supervisor on objectives established at the start of the internship to provide clear direction and goals.
    • Accompanying permitted or qualified biologists on field surveys for wildlife and botanical species.
    • Collect, enter, and/or QA data, and apply technical principles and theories, with training and oversight from a restoration ecologist. Utilize electronic data collection methods.
    • Interpret and record data, conduct analyses, compare findings to relevant studies and local, state and federal regulations to ensure compliance
    • Intern will be included in organization events such as staff meetings and brown bag workshops, and be given opportunities for networking and informational briefings with key personnel.
    • Occasional travel may be required.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • Currently in pursuit of a Bachelor’s Degree Natural Resources, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field.
    • Candidate must have completed 3 years of study in relevant degree program.
    • Valid U.S. Driver’s License.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • BA/BS or MS in relevant field (e.g., biology, ecology, environmental science).
    • Ability to operate four-wheel drive vehicles.
    • Physical ability to hike in challenging terrain, possibly for extended periods of time, and complete manual labor associated with plant propagation and restoration.
    • Candidate must be flexible and willing to support multiple projects as needed.
    • Strong communication skills.

    • A working knowledge of the major plant families and California flora.
    • The ability to work independently and as part of a team; be innovative and a problem solver.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office: Word and Excel; ability to create and maintain tracking spreadsheets and documents.

    Additional Information

    • Travel is required for this position.
    • Relocation is not offered for this position.
    • Sponsorship is not available for this position.
    • Candidates will be asked to submit to a Motor Vehicle Record screening upon hire.
    • Offered rate of compensation (California locations only) will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location.  The hourly range for this position is $21.37 - $37.39.
