Job Description

AECOM is seeking an experienced Architectural Historian for full-time employment in Southern California (preferably San Diego, Orange, or Los Angeles areas). The Architectural Historian is a core member of the Cultural Resources Practice with responsibility for successfully executing all aspects of project implementation. The Architectural Historian may serve as a Principal Investigator, based on work experience and education, including experience in historic research, field inventories, and site assessments pursuant to the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 and Section 110, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) compliance.

The successful candidate would become a part of a dynamic Southern California and West Coast environmental planning team that enjoys excellent relationships with a wide range of local, regional, and State agencies, as well as private and non-profit clients. AECOM’s projects often combine environmental analysis and review with urban design, policy planning, engineering and design, and other related elements. The candidate would also collaborate with a nation-wide team of experts and may be expected to contribute to projects outside California.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

• Conducting field inventories, historical research, and historic resource analysis pursuant to the NHPA Section 106 and NEPA/CEQA.
• Evaluating built environment resources for eligibility for listing in local registers, the California Register of Historical Resources, and the National Register of Historic Places.
• Assessing effects under Section 106 of the NHPA and impacts under NEPA/CEQA.
• Preparing archival documentation, such as Historic American Building Survey (HABS) and Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) documentation.
• Developing management plans and mitigation measures for historic properties.
• Preparing State of California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) 523 forms.
• Preparing written documents, including historic contexts, resource analysis, historic property inventory forms, and technical reports.
• Assist with business development efforts, such as scopes of work and proposals, as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

• BA/BS in architectural history, history, historic preservation, or related discipline.
• 4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
• Willingness/ability to travel and conduct fieldwork throughout Southern California.
• Valid driver’s license is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

• BA/BS in architectural history, history, historic preservation, or related discipline.
• 6 years of experience in architectural history and cultural resources treatment and evaluation in California.
• Meet the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for History and Architectural History.
• Experience in historic preservation planning and building materials conservation.
• Excellent proactive communication skills in terms of responsiveness, detailed assessments, and risk management.
• Demonstrated ability to carry projects to completion, including the ability to work on a wide range of projects within interdisciplinary teams.
• Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple complex projects while meeting established deadlines.
• High level of organization, attention to detail, and excellent technical writing skills.
• CAD and/or GIS skills.
