    Job Description

    AECOM is seeking a Traffic Engineering Manager to be based in Novi, Grand Rapids, or Detroit, MI.

    The ideal candidate will have experience in Traffic Engineering with leadership skills; emphasis in traffic analysis and VISSIM modeling, to lead our traffic engineering team in Michigan. The home office locations for this position include Novi, Detroit, and Grand Rapids. The successful candidate will provide project management, task management, technical team leadership and be responsible for delivery of these services on small to large projects.

    Our team works with local and national clients to provide solutions to their transportation needs across all modes of travel. Typical projects and daily tasks are focused on traffic engineering related services such as traffic projections, traffic analysis and simulation, traffic impact studies, traffic safety analysis/studies, maintenance of traffic studies, traffic conceptual planning and design, and other transportation related studies.

    Projects may also include traffic engineering design services for development of roadway striping, signing, signal, or maintenance of traffic plans for small to large highway and/or municipal roadways.

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Responsible for traffic engineering services in the state of Michigan overseeing teams of traffic engineers and technicians in multiple offices
    • Leads a growing team of mid-level and junior engineers in the execution of smaller standalone traffic engineering projects, or traffic engineering tasks as part of larger projects
    • Provides day-to-day direct mentoring and guidance to mid-level and junior engineers in the execution of their tasks
    • Performs or oversees—with little supervision—all aspects of traffic engineering studies including data collection, microsimulation model development and calibration (SimTraffic and VISSIM) or other deterministic models such as Synchro, HCS, Vistro, or Sidra, traffic forecasting, and analysis of alternatives
    • Presents technical findings to internal project teams, clients, and the public
    • Documentation including development of text, graphics, tables, etc. in technical memoranda and reports
    • Follows AECOM and client process in performing quality control tasks of other engineers’ work
    • Coordinates workload projections for direct reports and coordinates with other discipline leads in the Michigan office and traffic groups in surrounding states to coordinate workshare opportunities
    • Works collaboratively with other discipline leads in the Michigan office to perform business development activities such as identification of project opportunities, marketing clients, making technical presentations at conferences, assisting with proposal preparation, and assisting with recruiting efforts
    • Works collaboratively with other statewide traffic engineering leads in other states to coordinate business activities and project delivery throughout the US West region
    • Assists direct reports in setting and accomplishing goals that advance their professional development
    • Assists project managers in the development of scopes of work, cost estimates, and schedules
    • Proposes approaches to solve new problems encountered and create efficiencies in work through use of modifications to standard procedures or methods developed in previous assignments
    • Performs work in accordance with agreed upon budget and schedule
    • Initiates and maintains contact with senior-level management within the company and is skilled in dispute resolution and negotiation of critical issues. At this level, the individual will have demonstrated understanding of project delivery requirements, creativity, foresight, working with a multi-disciplinary team to meet project goals and deliver high quality technical excellence.
    • Demonstrates mature judgment in anticipating and solving both routine and unusual operations problems, determining operational objectives and requirements, organizing programs and projects, and developing standards and guides for diverse engineering activities
    • Supervision received is essentially administrative with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits
  • Qualifications

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • BA/BS + 10 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education, including 2 years of leadership
    • Professional Engineer license in the State of Michigan, or the ability to obtain license within 6 months

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • 15+ years of experience in traffic engineering
    • Experience in technical execution of tasks for traffic engineering projects with an emphasis of microsimulation and modeling of all modes of transportation and facility types
    • Experience working on complex freeway/arterial projects relative to traffic analyses
    • Experience working with Metropolitan Planning Organizations to prepare traffic projections
    • Proficient in conveying traffic analysis outcomes to clients and laypersons
    • Deep proficiency with Synchro/SimTraffic, VISSIM, and HCS software, the calibration and validation of these tools, with the ability to understand and apply model results relative to application within a broader project
    • Understanding of the processes by which regional travel demand models are used to inform development traffic projections as part of microsimulation analysis.
    • Expertise with Highway Capacity Manual and FHWA Traffic Analysis Toolkit methodologies
    • Proficient with standard Microsoft Office applications
    • Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing)
    • An ability to work with and inform highway and bridge design teams in the development of lane requirements, intersection and interchange layouts, and non-motorized considerations, relying on a broad and practical understanding of project geometrics
    • Experience in supporting business development activities including preparing project proposals and firm marketing
    • Working relationships and experience with the Michigan Department of Transportation
    • Working relationships and experience with Michigan Metropolitan Planning Organizations
    • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE)
    • Understanding and application of MDOT’s VISSIM protocol and processes required for development of microsimulation models
    • Experience in traffic safety analysis including Highway Safety Manual, traffic signal warrants, traffic signal and pedestrian crossing control system analysis, and design; and traffic signing and pavement marking analysis and design
    • Experience in task/project management, staff oversight, application and development of technical skills, and experience working directly with internal and external clients
    • Experience in mentorship and development of traffic engineering interns and/or entry level staff
    • Experience with MicroStation or other similar applications
    • Experience with traditional four step or activity based travel demand models
    • Project management experience

    Additional Information

    Offered rate of compensation (Michigan locations only) will be based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The salary range for this position is $125,000 - $210,000/yr.
