    Job Description

    AECOM is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to be based in our Virginia Beach, VA office. The Senior Mechanical Engineer will work independently to complete small and large project design requirements. This position will be responsible for leading projects for new facilities and renovation, modernization, and repurposing of existing buildings.

    The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the following items:

    • Senior technical resource may serve as technical advisor for team

    • Provides specialized technical input to studies and design for staff's specific area of expertise

    • Develops study and design procedures to facilitate high quality cost effective work by others

    • Participates in interdisciplinary review of project deliverables

    • Develops construction cost estimates and estimates of technical efforts for projects

    • Uses expertise in all steps of completing discipline component of PS&E package

    • Performs quality control review of design calculations or drawings

    • Prepares technical specification sections

    • Provides input to the development of engineering budget and schedule to meet requirements

    • Be proficient in all aspects of mechanical systems design for projects of all sizes

    • Evaluate, select, apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and judgement based on experience to design HVAC systems in buildings

    • Will concisely express complex system solutions in very early design phases

    • Coordinate HVAC systems with other disciplines

    • Make major design decisions and recommendations with little input from senior staff

    • Maintain accurate project documentation and design data for permanent project files

    • Act as an adviser and review correspondence prepared by junior project team members

    • Assist with mentoring of junior staff

    • Attend project meetings, both internal and with clients

    • Assist in project quality control review

    • Review and approve shop drawings, respond to RFI’s, and other construction admin related tasks

    Minimum Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and six (6) years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
    • Professional experience and skills in mechanical systems design for buildings
    • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
    • U.S. Citizenship is required for this position

    Preferred Qualifications

    • 8 years of relevant, Mechanical Engineering building design experience
    • Full understanding and ability to complete and coordinate project design assignments with the ability to review team member’s work for quality and recognition of training requirements
    • Experience with building HVAC systems including but not limited to chilled water, hot water, condenser water, steam, and air-side systems
    • Experience with sustainable design and energy efficiency
    • Knowledge/experience with building plumbing systems design
    • Experience with Design-Build projects
    • Experience with U.S. Department of Defense agency requirements (UFCs, SpecsIntact, etc.)
    • Successfully performed the role of lead engineer on various projects
    • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently
    • Good interpersonal, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills
    • AutoCAD and Revit experience
