Director, Community Engagement

Reports to: Vice President, Policy and Programs
Supervises: Three FTEs
Term: Immediately
Status: Full time, Exempt Employee, 40 hours/week.
Salary: $100,000-$115,000
Position Summary: The Director, Community Engagement will be primarily responsible for developing and implementing strategy for Advancing Justice | AAJC’s community outreach and advocacy initiatives, community and public education efforts, and overseeing our Community Partners Network strategy and capacity building. The Director, Community Engagement will support Advancing Justice | AAJC policy leads in developing policy advocacy campaigns; implement nationally coordinated campaigns with Community Partner organizations; and oversee staff in leading our youth engagement initiatives.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Organizational Leadership and Strategic Planning
· Act as thought partner to the Vice President, Policy and Programs on community engagement, mobilization, education, and relationship building initiatives.
· Work closely with policy leads and all other staff to provide leadership and direction in setting budgets, program goals and strategies, advancing new ideas and innovation that align with our organizational mission and strategic plan.
· Work closely with the executive team, to share responsibility to spearhead cross-organizational initiatives amongst our internal divisions.
Community Outreach and Advocacy
· In collaboration with the Vice President, Policy and Programs, support policy leads in developing strategies for community outreach and advocacy campaigns at the national, state, and local levels. In consultation with policy leads, implement field strategies and related campaigns.
· Successfully navigate legislative and other policy making processes; develop and maintain partnerships with policymakers and coalition allies in order to maximize impact on critical campaign issues.
· Work effectively with diverse coalition members and build alliances with organizations across the political and ideological spectrum.
Community Education, Engagement, and Capacity Building
· In coordination with Advancing Justice | AAJC staff, identify, develop, and implement community education initiatives and materials across program areas, and ensure that information is delivered in a targeted manner through the Community Partners Network and other avenues.
· In collaboration with the Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives and in coordination with the Advancing Justice affiliates, support the planning and execution of the Advancing Justice Conference.
· Coordinate and conduct outreach, training, and capacity building programs for Asian American community-based organizations across the country; and
· Coordinate and implement subgrants across program areas and capacity building priorities.
· Work with Advancing Justice | AAJC staff to conduct periodic needs assessments.
Community Partners Network Management
· Manage organizational relationships with Community Partners.
· Supervise the Community Outreach and Data Coordinator in the maintenance of databases and electronic listservs for Community Partners Network, and collaborate with Advancing Justice | AAJC staff to provide materials and information for Community Partners;
· In consultation with the Vice President, Policy and Programs, work with communications staff to develop and implement strategic communications plans related to Community Partners Network, including providing content support, responding to press inquiries, and making public speaking appearances as necessary and appropriate.
Youth Leadership Summit and Youth Engagement
· In consultation with Vice President, Policy and Programs, and supervising the Community Engagement Manager, lead planning and execution of annual Youth Leadership Summit and youth engagement initiatives.
· Provide technical assistance, oversight, and assessment for student stipend projects following the summit.
· In collaboration with Advancing Justice | AAJC staff, identify opportunities for integration of Youth Leadership Summit participants and alumni in field outreach and advocacy initiatives and community education efforts.
Volunteer Engagement
· In consultation with Vice President, Policy and Programs, the Development team, and supervising the Civic Engagement & Volunteer Coordinator, lead planning and execution of volunteer engagement strategy, including with Community Partners and corporate employee resource groups (ERGs).
Fundraising
· Contribute to the development and implementation of a development supported growth strategy for community and youth engagement, including the identification of donor prospects through work with peer organizations and other professional contacts and the development of potential programmatic elements that may be of particular interest to donors/prospects;
· Work with the finance and development teams to craft project budgets and contribute to the development of grant proposals relating to our community and youth engagement strategies, education, and initiatives;
· Provide content/information for donor communications and materials (donor newsletters, action alerts, special reports from the executive director, social media postings, etc.); and
· Attend meetings with prospects/donors as necessary and appropriate.
EDUCATIONAL AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:
Education and Experience:
· Bachelor’s Degree.
· At least eight (8) years of work experience in a related field.
· Experience in policy advocacy, campaigns, and/or field organizing.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
· Ability to operationalize vision, think strategically, creatively problem solve, exercise good judgment, and lead change.
· Successful track record of forging alliances and coalitions and moving people to take collective action and engage in advocacy.
· Facilitative and collaborative leadership style with strong people skills.
· Experience working with diverse groups from various sectors.
· Fundraising experience including building and developing relationships.
· Excellent communicator and writer who can articulate messages to different audiences, including translating law and policy into plain language.
· Proven ability to work collegially with management and team members.
· Willing to adapt to changing priorities and balance competing assignments is necessary.
· Must have the ability to plan, organize, and help to oversee a comprehensive program.
Desired Qualification
· Experience and knowledge in Asian American, civil and human rights issues at local, state, and national levels.
