ASL Interpreter - VA Healthcare System
Location: Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio (VISN 10 service area)
Employment Type: Independent Contractor
Compensation: $45 - $55/hr
Schedule: As-needed basis, variable hours based on appointment scheduling
Position Overview
CLFC Healthcare & Communications is seeking qualified American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreters for the VA Network Contract Office 10 (NCO 10), serving VA medical centers and clinics across Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. This position provides on-site ASL interpretation services for Deaf and hard-of-hearing veteran patients during medical appointments, mental health sessions, surgical consultations, and administrative interactions throughout the VISN 10 network.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide accurate, real-time ASL interpretation between Deaf/hard-of-hearing veterans and VA healthcare providers during clinical encounters
- Interpret in medical, mental health, surgical, pharmacy, and administrative settings
- Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations and the RID Code of Professional Conduct
- Accurately convey medical terminology, diagnoses, treatment plans, and informed consent information
- Coordinate scheduling with CLFC program management and VA facility points of contact
- Submit accurate time and service documentation per contract requirements
- Travel to assigned VA facilities within the VISN 10 service area as needed
Required Qualifications
- National certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID): NIC, NIC Advanced, NIC Master, CI/CT, or CDI
- Minimum 2 years of professional ASL interpreting experience
- Demonstrated proficiency in medical interpreting, including familiarity with healthcare terminology
- Ability to pass a background investigation for VA facility access
- Reliable transportation for travel to multiple VA facilities within VISN 10
- U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status
Preferred Qualifications
- 3+ years of medical ASL interpreting experience
- Prior VA or federal healthcare facility interpreting experience
- Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) credential
- BEI (Board for Evaluation of Interpreters) certification at Advanced or Master level
- Experience interpreting in mental health and behavioral health settings
- Familiarity with VA patient population and veteran-specific terminology
