    Position: Accountant (Full-Time, In-Office) Location: Portland, ME (with support to Augusta office) Schedule: Monday–Friday, standard business hours Salary: $55,000 – $65,000/year (DOE) Reports To: CFO

    Job Summary:

    The Accountant will assist with day-to-day accounting functions, including billing, accounts payable and receivable, financial reporting, and trust account management. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented and organized individual looking to develop their accounting career in a fast-paced law firm environment. The Junior Accountant will work closely with the CFO to maintain financial accuracy and compliance with industry regulations.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Accounting & Financial Support:

    Assist in maintaining the firm’s general ledger and reconciling financial accounts.

    Process accounts payable and receivable, ensuring timely payments and collections.

    Support payroll processing, including tracking employee deductions and tax withholdings.

    Help prepare monthly and quarterly financial reports under the CFO’s supervision.

    Maintain accurate financial records and assist in audits.

    Billing & Client Accounting:

    Support client invoicing, ensuring accuracy in time entries and expense tracking.

    Monitor outstanding client balances and assist in collections efforts.

    Reconcile work-in-progress (WIP) reports with the firm’s case management system.

    Trust Accounting & Compliance:

    Assist in managing IOLTA in accordance with Maine Bar rules.

    Ensure compliance with ABA trust accounting regulations by properly tracking client funds.

    Prepare trust reconciliations and reports for review by the CFO.

    Financial Process Improvement:

    Identify ways to streamline accounting processes for efficiency.

    Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow monitoring as directed by the CFO.

    Support the CFO in implementing accounting software upgrades or process improvements.

    Qualifications:

    Education: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).

    Experience: 1-3 years of accounting experience, preferably in a law firm or professional services environment.

    Software Proficiency: Experience with QuickBooks, Clio, or similar legal accounting software is a plus.

    Familiarity with law firm trust accounting and compliance regulations is preferred, but not required.

    Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and ability to meet deadlines.

    Ability to work independently while taking direction from the CFO.
