Accounting Manager – Construction Portfolio

This Accounting Manager role owns day-to-day accounting for a $50–$100M project revenue portfolio in Irvine. You’ll be the on-site financial point person for the Irvine office, leading a small team, tightening processes, and giving leadership clean, timely numbers across both entities.
The Role
This is a hands-on, in-the-weeds Accounting Manager role with a construction focus. You’ll sit in the Irvine office, Monday–Friday, with up to 50 WFH days per year as a key flexibility benefit.
You will:
- Lead day-to-day accounting operations across (OC/LA branch): AP, AR, payroll coordination, cash posting, and general ledger maintenance.
- Own month-end close: journal entries, reconciliations, supporting schedules, and internal reporting for a ~$50–$100M book of business.
- Manage contract billing and collections, including WIP / percentage-of-completion accounting, change orders, and job close-out.
- Monitor job cost, margins, and overruns across union and non-union work.
- Handle compliance-heavy construction items: Davis-Bacon/prevailing wage, OCIP/CCIP programs, bonding requirements, garnishments, and related documentation.
- Oversee SUTA/FUTA and other payroll-related filings, including client-specific billing.
- Serve as a key contact for vendors, resolving invoice and payment issues quickly and professionally.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and ad hoc financial analysis for Irvine operations.
- Be a local culture carrier in the office—helping coordinate workflow, communication, and expectations across the accounting/admin team.
Team & Reporting Structure
You will manage a small, experienced support team of ~5 people, including:
- Office manager with broad office knowledge.
- 2 Multi-hat team member supporting various functions.
- Payroll-focused team member.
- Office Administrator
Reporting lines:
- Primary: Unit President, (OC/LA branch), Controller, CFO, Corporate CFO - Umbrella Company(Kansas City)
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; equivalent experience considered.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with construction or specialty contracting exposure strongly preferred.
- Solid grasp of GAAP, internal controls, and job cost concepts.
- Experience working across multiple entities or business units.
- Strong Excel skills and ERP experience; prior exposure to Penta or similar construction systems is helpful.
- Experience leading or mentoring staff; comfortable setting expectations and coaching.
- Clear, direct communication style with field leaders, executives, and vendors.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus, not a requirement.

Standout Candidates will have (not required):
- Prior billing or compliance experience with Healthcare client projects.
- Active involvement with CFMA.
- CCIFP certification or interest in pursuing it.
- Penta software experience.
