    Military Veteran- Equipment Operator Apprentice

    Adaptive Construction Solutions (ACS) is looking for military veterans interested in starting a career in the Landscaping Industry as an Equipment Operator Apprentice. Candidates must be based out of Houston, TX. Equipment Operator Apprentices must be able to read and understand plans/maps, material lists, guidelines and meet timelines. Have ability to navigate small or large tractor machinery around obstacles without damage to the obstacle. An Equipment must possess strong verbal and written communication skills to interface the public in a professional manner.

    Upon placement into a full-time job, apprentices begin employment by participating in up to 2-3 weeks of orientation and craft training. Apprentices are paid wages during this extended orientation/training. Training is sponsored by employers and the workforce system.

    What is Apprenticeship?

    The apprenticeship model is leading the way in preparing American workers to compete in today’s economy. Apprenticeship allows an individual to earn while they learn. It includes:

    Compensation

    Starting at $16.00+ per hour during orientation and training with incremental wage increases as competencies are achieved. Veterans are eligible to apply for a monthly housing allowance as part of their GI Bill Benefits.

    Role of an Equipment Operator

    Equipment Operators perform a wide range of duties such as:

    • Turf maintenance such as large machine, slope, and small machine mowing, via the use of heavy equipment/mowing machinery, such as a zero turn or batwing mowing machines
    • Upkeep and care of intermediate and small mowing equipment to include routine Preventive Maintenance cycles, cleaning, lubrication and sharpening of mower blades.
    • Basic small gas tool maintenance of replacement of air filters, blades, cleaning carburetors
    • Recognize and report damaged turf or other assets within the roadway and roadside system
    • Other turf duties such as herbicide sprayer application, small mower utilization, trimmer applications, etc. as required and directed
    • Basic ability and understanding of technology for reporting workflow
    • Other duties (not listed) may be assigned to this job at any time

     

    Work Environment

    As one may expect, construction is performed in physically demanding conditions requiring heightened situational awareness. These conditions include but are not limited to regularly required to stand; sit; walk on a wide range of surfaces; use hands and fingers, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

    Training is sponsored by employers and the workforce system. While earning wages and learning a skilled trade, veterans may utilize their GI Bill benefits to receive a tax-free monthly housing allowance. The combination of wages and GI Bill benefits helps veterans earn journey-level wages while progressing in an apprenticeship program.

    Candidate Requirements (no experience required)

    • Be based in the Houston, TX area
      • Willingness to submit to drug screening, physical and background check
      • Have a valid government issued identification card or driver’s license and clean MVR
      • Must have reliable transportation to the job site
        • Able to carry 50/60lbs of equipment and lift 100lbs
        • Proven commitment to safety
        • Ability to work independently and complete daily activities according to work schedule
        • Available to work on holidays, nights, weekends, and overtime
        • On call duties as assigned
