POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Boilermaker Apprentice
FLSA: Non-exempt
POSITION REPORTS TO: Boiler Shop Foreman
POSITION PURPOSE: A Boilermaker Apprentice’s primary purpose is to perform specialized maintenance and repairs to steam boilers and appurtenances, to qualify on Aire Serv's certified welding procedures, become proficient at boiler-making, and other tasks as assigned by the Boiler Shop Supervisor or other superiors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Keep the workplace clean and orderly.
Comply with instructions provided by supervisor or designees.
Perform routine maintenance and inspection of boilers, steam-driven appurtenances, steam and water piping, feedwater systems, and other steam and hydronic systems.
Observes steam boilers in operation to identify problems and their sources.
Operate machinery such as but not limited to forklifts, telehandlers, skid-steer loader, backhoe.
Performs piping removal and installation, fitting, and bending.
Remove and replace defective parts using lifting equipment such as overhead cranes as required.
Become proficient in Aire Serv's certified welding procedures.
Develop a working knowledge of specialized steam boiler construction, maintenance, and repair techniques.
Fabricates parts using machine and hand tools, welders, cutting torches, plasma cutters, and other metalworking equipment.
Documents work as required.
Perform additional duties as required.
PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS:
Demonstrates progressive increases in knowledge of boilers and boiler-making techniques at designated evaluation intervals.
Able to identify properly and improperly functioning systems and diagnose problems with boiler systems.
Carries out proper and efficient repairs in compliance with company policies.
Fabricates parts to specified dimensions and tolerances.
Ability to identify parts and materials appropriate for the application.
Anticipates need for materials and makes requisitions in a timely manner.
Seeks instruction when needed to complete inspections and repairs properly.
Shows up to work on time, properly attired, and prepared to work.
Enthusiastically takes on responsibility and aids Team Members to accomplish department goals.
Works safely and efficiently and maintains a clean and orderly workplace.
Complies with instructions from superiors and works independently when required.
Complies with all policies outlined in the Employee Handbook or supplemental policy or guideline memos.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Enthusiasm for the company and its mission.
Ability to carry out verbal or written instructions.
Proficient in operating welding machines, oxy/fuel torch rigs, plasma cutters, angle grinders and other metal fabrication tools.
Proficient with the use of hand and power tools.
Possession of valid driver’s license preferred.
Organizational skills and careful attention to detail.
Willingness to work at heights on ladders, scaffolds, man lifts, or on top of rail-mounted equipment.
Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
Willingness and desire to learn.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Full-time, minimum forty (40) hours per week. Regular shop hours are 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. Shift has regular variations due to changing projects, priorities, and other factors.
Work is primarily indoors, though many duties will require occasional outdoor work in all weather conditions in all seasons.
Work requires regular social contact with Team Members, customers, and vendors.
Occasional exposure to very hot or very cold temperatures.
Frequent exposure in a shop setting to soot, dust, oil, paint, and other potentially hazardous substances.
Frequent work in areas of restricted movement.
Frequent need for personal protective equipment.
Extended periods of walking or standing.
Frequent lifting of more than 50 pounds.
