    CALIBRE Systems, Inc., an employee-owned management consulting and digital transformation company, is looking for a SENIOR DEVELOPER WITH CLOUD ARCHITECTURE to support our client at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in Bethesda, MD. NCBI is part of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) whose wide range of applications serve more users and more data than any other US Government Agency. NCBI provides free access to petabytes of biomedical and genomic information with scientists all over the world using NCBI products, including PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, GenBank, RefSeq, and ClinVar.

    We are seeking a creative professional who can work equally effectively with user researchers, designers, product managers, scientists, security and DevOps engineers, and more. Also, work with teams of dedicated, skilled developers, researchers, and product professionals while building robust, flexible cloud-based pipelines serving dozens of production applications and thousands of APIs and services.

     Principal responsibilities include the following:

    • Development, implementation, testing, and continued maintenance of NCBI bioinformatics pipelines
    • Collaborate with a diverse group of scientists, bioinformaticians and other developers across the center to implement efficient
    • Develop bioinformatics algorithms
    • Facilitate development of cloud-ready tools and pipelines to support sustainable scalability and enable use by collaborators and scientists in the field
    • Learn new technologies, keep up with internal systems, and share your knowledge with the team
    • Lead other developers

     

    Required Skills Required Experience

    • 3+ years of experience handling large amounts of data or working in a distributed computing environment
    • Programming experience in a Linux environment
    • Experience with Cloud technologies a strong plus:
      • AWS: EC2, S3, Lambda
      • GCP: GKE, Google Storage, cloud functions
    • Proficiency in at least one modern programming language- Java, C, C++
    • Fluency in some scripting languages - BASH, csh, Perl, or Python
    • Ability to work with common structured documents (at least one of XML, JSON)
    • Experience with open source projects
    • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, unit testing, integration and regression testing

     Desired Skills:

    • 5+ years of working with genetic and biological data
    • Experience with MS SQL server, including XML typed data storage and manipulation
    • Familiarity with NGS computational tools and formats (BWA, GATK, Galaxy, etc.)
    • Demonstrated active involvement into open source communities (GitHub, etc.)
    • Experience managing production workflow of an online public database
    • Experience with RESTful API design

     Other Information:

    • This position will begin with working remotely until it has been determined by the NIH that workers can return to the NIH campus. Any telework thereafter will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
    • Position contingent on obtaining an NIH Public Trust and NIH badging.

  • Qualifications
    • Excellent oral and written communications skills are required.
    • Must be knowledgeable about payment processing with strong accounting and reconciliation abilities.
    • Advanced MS Excel skills; knowledge of pivot tables, v-lookups, IF statements, etc. is a plus.
    • Proficient use of MS Word and Outlook
    • Critical thinking and problem solving are required.
    • Ability to analyze various types of data and compile concise reporting when needed.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced production environment and adhere to daily deadlines.
