Position Description : The primary role of an YS3 mentor is to support assigned students to develop academic and life skills that will enable them to succeed educationally and create a foundation for independent living. The mentor will establish a positive rapport with the students and model listening skills, trust, empathy, responsibility, problem solving and a positive demeanor. The mentor will also advise, counsel, guide and teach students to engage in new opportunities and challenges. The mentor must actively help the students build character self-esteem and confidence to achieve their educational goals while providing stability and positive reinforcement. The mentor will be instrumental in guiding the students' academic, post-secondary and career goals. Responsibilities and Duties: * Works with students to identify barriers to success and strategies to address them * Monitor student academic status, attendance and school expectations * Collaborates with teachers to support academic goals to include GED and ELO * Tracks truant students and regularly communicates with ASN Staff/ Retention Specialist * Conduct preventive staffing with students and DCFS caseworker. * Create student incentives and criteria to attain incentives * Consistently provides one-on-one sessions with YS3 youth * Conducts regular home visits * Organize activities related to academic, career and life skills growth * Provides emergency resources to students * Advocates on behalf of students regarding personal issues * Engages/re-engages youth to attend school * Recruits new students to maintain full enrollment * Submits documents needed for completion of intakes and exits * Submits Monthly enrollment report to include enrolled and pending students * Assist with auditing school files * Attend monthly mentor meetings and ASN/DCFS activities and trainings § Must maintain a flexible work schedule for at least 5 days a week for student required services. Organizational Requirements: * Attend all ASN/GED meetings * Attend related trainings * Support ASN sponsored events Qualifications: * Four Year College Degree in either education, social work or psychology background · Three years experience working with adolescents at risk youth and /or DCFS youth. * Broad knowledge and experience in case management and crisis intervention * Above average skills client advocacy * Excellent skills in relationship building * Strong interpersonal skills * Demonstrated ability to effectively explain the YS3 program * Demonstrated ability to complete individual tasks * Demonstrated ability to collaborate with team members as well as others * General knowledge of providing one on one mentoring sessions * Excellent verbal and written communication skills * Requires use of a car with a driver's license and valid insurance Send resumes to: Doris Franklin, Director, ASN Preparatory Institute at dfranklin@asnchicago.org.
