Job Overview: Responsibilities include and are not limited to: troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining industrial equipment, machinery, and systems to ensure optimal operating conditions and productivity. The Industrial Equipment Mechanic will also assist with upgrades, improvements, and assigned projects as needed.
Flexible shift schedules include 12-hour and 8-hour shifts:
- 12-hour shift: alternating days/nights (6:00AM-6:00PM or 6:00PM-6:00AM) with alternating weekends and some holidays.
- 8-hour shift: Monday – Friday (6:00AM – 2:00PM)
Principal Accountabilities:
- Receive and complete job assignments based on work orders, sketches, PM schedules, blueprints, or verbal instructions. Adhere to applicable codes and regulations.
- Respond to emergency repair requests promptly.
- Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain a variety of industrial equipment and systems, including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic components.
- Install, modify, and relocate machinery and equipment. Perform fabrication, welding, mechanical, electrical, electronics, plumbing, carpentry, or other maintenance tasks as required.
- Repair and modify buildings and plant systems as needed.
- Read and interpret manuals, schematics, blueprints, drawings, and other installation and repair instructions.
- Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment, machinery, and systems.
- Requisition and secure materials, tools, and supplies for assignments.
- Utilize a variety of measuring and testing equipment to troubleshoot, maintain, and repair machinery, equipment, and systems.
- Operate shop, hand, and power tools commonly used in the trade.
- Maintain accurate records, logs, and system readings.
- Troubleshoot and repair various components, such as rolls, shafts, bearings, drive belts, drive chains, and gearboxes using basic mechanic's hand and power tools.
- Troubleshoot and repair pumps, valves, and piping systems, including pipe threading.
- Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic cylinders and controls.
- Troubleshoot and repair pneumatic cylinders and controls.
- Perform routine setup and operation of drill press, lathe, mill, and grinding machine.
- Perform basic layout, steel fabrication, and welding of carbon steel.
- Demonstrate knowledge of electrical schematic and mechanical blueprint reading.
- Understand basic water treatment principles.
- Document completed work on work orders.
- Adhere to all environmental, safety, and health rules and regulations.
- Comply with sanitation guidelines and good manufacturing practices related to cleanliness, product cleanliness, and personal hygiene.
- Perform other assigned tasks as needed.
Knowledge & Experience:
- Understand, adhere to, and reinforce EHS policies and directives.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with other Industrial Equipment Mechanics, production co-workers, and management.
- Minimum 5 years of experience as a maintenance technician. Skills and experience should include:
- Allen Bradley PLC (ControlLogix, SLC-500, & PLC5)
- Allen Bradley and other variable frequency drives
- Servo control systems
- Process control & instrumentation (temperature, flow, pressure, level, etc.)
- Power distribution - 480 VAC
- Ability to perform all required PM checklists
- Ability to perform all required ISO Calibration for plant production equipment
- Knowledge of general maintenance techniques, processes, and procedures for the repair, installation, and modification of various equipment, systems, and facilities
Education and Certifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (minimum requirement)
- Combination of technical training and schooling equivalent to that generally obtained in a two-year college or apprenticeship program. Veterans with technical training are encouraged to apply.
- Preferred: Associate's Degree in Industrial Maintenance and/or 5 years of experience.
Skills/Abilities/Behaviors:
- Proficient in the use of basic hand, shop, and power tools, as well as various test and measuring equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, maintenance manuals, schematics, and drawings.
- Ability to conduct tests on systems and apply appropriate regulations and standards.
- Forklift Certification or ability to obtain one.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and make decisions regarding problem-solving approaches.
- Strong creative thinking and troubleshooting skills.
- Good critical judgment and initiative.
- Ability to cooperate well with others, follow safety procedures, and prevent injuries.
- Experience in the printing and converting industries is a plus.
Physical Demands:
- Work requires physical strain, such as extended periods of standing and walking in the production facility, and occasional lifting of heavy items (e.g., cores or shafts).
- Ability to lift 55+ pounds on a frequent basis.
- Other physical demands include crouching and reaching.
- Use of ladders and elevated walkways may be required.
Work Environment:
- Standard industrial type environment with exposure to typical plant and outdoor conditions, including inclement weather, noise, oil, grease, and chemical odors to some extent.
- Potential for hand, eye, and foot injuries, back strain, and falls.
- Exposure to electricity, compressed air systems, hydraulics, propane, and chemicals that require proper safety precautions.
- Frequent exposure to noise levels requiring the use of hearing protection.
- Occasional contact with solvents, requiring the use of long-sleeved uniforms, gloves, and safety glasses.
- Occasional exposure to solvent fumes and flammable liquids.
