  • Responsibilities

    Objective: Lead, manage, train, and develop group fitness team members according to the company’s Mission, Vision, Pillars of Success, Service Standards, and Business philosophy in order to continually provide optimal performance for net member growth, retention, and club profitability. Manage all department-specific revenue and non-revenue performance and payroll budgets in order to maximize group fitness effectiveness. The GFM will grow the group fitness program and team, assist in regional operational committees, and fully support an aligned and consistent group fitness strategy for the company.

    Reports to: General Manager and Group Fitness Director

    Criteria:

    At least one year of management experience and three years of Group Fitness teaching experience

    AFAA or ACE Accredited Primary Group Fitness Exercise Certification

    At least one MOSSA certification (or a willingness to obtain one within 90 days of hire)

    At least one AFF-approved specialty certification preferred - Ex: Zumba, Spinning, RYT200, etc.

    CPR and AED Certification

    Proficient oral, written, and technology communication (email/texting) skills

    Knowledge of business software and Microsoft Windows/Office

    As an AFF team member, responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    Provide the highest quality customer service to all members by greeting them with a welcoming, friendly, energetic, and positive attitude at all times. Use members’ names as often as possible.

    Ensure exceptional customer service by hiring, training, and maintaining a proactive, efficient, professional, and friendly team.

    Set an example of professional behavior and exceptional customer service for all team members.

    Embrace and follow the company Service Standards, the guidelines outlined in the AFF Training and Policy Manuals, and any applicable department-specific team handbooks.

    Respond to member concerns and/or comments in a timely and professional way.

    Know the club’s emergency response protocol and be prepared to act. Exercise sound judgment with safety as a priority.

    Schedule the team to provide appropriate coverage based on the needs established by the club leadership team and the company Department Director.

    Arrive to work 10 minutes early. Wear department-specific uniform.

    Be a team player by contributing to both club and organizational goals.

    Maintain open and honest communication with the leadership team and company Department Director; partner together as fitness professionals. Respond within 24 hours to all time-sensitive email, text, and/or phone requests.

    Develop, implement, and evaluate department goals on a regular basis in partnership with the GM and the company Department Director.

    Participate actively in all club, department, and company meetings. Inform the team and club members of developments, promotions, activities, and upcoming events within the club and throughout the organization.

    Coach, teach, educate, and support the team to be successful in their roles and to meet the goals set in partnership with the GM and the company Department Director.

    Provide ongoing feedback to the team and deliver performance reviews.

    Communicate effectively with all team members.

    Proactively engage with team members and coach toward success in their roles. Document progress and opportunities; use disciplinary action and/or terminate employment if necessary.

    Hold regularly scheduled department meetings for ongoing training and information sharing. Submit the minutes of each meeting to the GM/AGM/Company Department Director.

    Accurately complete new hire paperwork and deliver to the GM so it can be submitted to corporate before placing a new team member on the schedule.

    Schedule a prompt orientation for all new team members.

    Maintain current personnel records on the team, perform administrative duties, and complete required paperwork accurately and on time.

    Use proper chain of command and ensure the team does the same.

    As a Group Fitness Manager, additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    Communicate regularly with the Group Fitness Director/GFD (aka Company Department Director) and partner together on hiring, scheduling, programming, events, instructor development, and all other Group Fitness initiatives.

    Proactively work with company-wide peers to support each other for success as an organization.

    Coordinate and implement program and class strategies in partnership with the GFD.

    Meet with team members regularly (new hires and tenured) to align everyone on current initiatives, responsibilities, and education/training opportunities.

    Educate instructors on the importance of ongoing development. Participate actively in AFF-recommended and required education, workshops, trainings, events, meetings, upskilling, etc.; ensure instructor team does the same.

    Teach classes on an as-needed basis in accordance with MOSSA standards, AFF parameters, and program direction set in partnership with the GFD; ensure instructor team does the same.

    Align with company and industry guidelines for safe and effective exercise and always deliver appropriate modifications; ensure instructor team does the same.

    Arrive to class 10 minutes early, help set up, provide thorough class introductions, teach world-class programs, and stay after to clean up, answer questions, and invite members and guests to participate in additional classes and club activities; ensure instructor team does the same.

    Motivate members and the team to achieve their fitness goals by offering positive encouragement and an enjoyable, non-competitive environment.

    Actively engage in all Group Fitness meetings, professional development opportunities, and ongoing leadership trainings. Show continued application of concepts learned and/or discussed.

    Partner with the GFD to network, recruit, audition, and hire instructors to build the team and grow our programs.

    Stay active and current with AFF-approved certifications, including CPR and specialty certifications for your programs as defined by the GFD; ensure instructor team does the same. Keep updated copies of team member certifications on file in the club.

    Provide PAs and current copies of all AFF-approved instructor certifications (including CPR) to the GFD prior to placing an instructor on the schedule.

    Ensure schedules are accurately posted online and in print at least one week prior to the start of the month.

    Accurately enter all program attendance and club traffic data regularly in our digital tracking system (every 2 – 3 days).

    Monitor class performance while working with the GFD to make adjustments that continually improve attendance, instructor success, and member satisfaction.

    Manage and post social media marketing at the club-level for the department

    Submit department payroll accurately and on time for each pay period.

    Maintain studio cleanliness including, but not limited to, the stereo system and the class equipment. Ensure ongoing availability of supplies such as batteries, cleaning agents, windscreens, equipment, etc.

    Provide requests for additional equipment to the GM and GFD.

    Perform other duties as reasonably assigned.
