  • Responsibilities

    Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Park Manager, this position performs husbandry duties and handling of the Ambassador Animal collection, schedules and conducts interpretive programs, scripted and informal shows, and recreational activities for park visitors and guests at Amicalola Falls State Park & Lodge.

    This is a full-time year-round position.  $13.00 per hour

    JOB REQUIREMENTS

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); Associate’s Degree or higher in related field required; at least three months of husbandry/animal handling/education experience required; combination of experience may substitute for degree.

    COMPUTER SKILLS:  Proficiency in Microsoft Suite is required. Experience using Google Drive is preferred. Must know how to perform research using the Internet.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read a limited number of two and three syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences. Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.

    MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide. Ability to perform these operations and using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:  Valid Driver’s License is required for this position.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION

    TO PERFORM THE JOB SUCCESSFULLY, AN INDIVIDUAL SHOULD PERFORM THE FOLLOWING ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

    • Daily husbandry duties including but not limited to cleaning, diet prep, feeding, enrichment, training, handling, and basic veterinary care of the animal collection (including raptors and reptiles)
    • Maintaining records in the animal care log
    • Scheduling of programs and activities
    • Performing educational programs for field trips, outreaches, and informal meet-and-greets
    • Creating and implementing a diverse and ongoing series of educational programs, workshops, and special events for the Park
    • Providing world-class guest service in accordance with established guidelines and standards
    • Working closely and professionally with the Assistant Park Manager to ensure visitor and guest satisfaction
    • Providing a safe and sanitary environment for visitors, guests, and employees

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    • Must be able to work in a fast-paced, high energy, and physically demanding environment
    • Must be able to spend 90% of working time standing, walking, and lifting; 10% of working time sitting
    • Pushing, pulling, and lifting objects from a lower to higher position or moving objects horizontally, from position to position
    • Carry large birds for at least 60 minutes at a time while interpreting information during programs
    • Feeling or grasping objects of different size and shape
    • Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching in narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces
    • Will be required to use physical capabilities including climbing and ascending or descending ladders, stairs, and ramps
    • Must be able to carry loads greater than 35 pounds and exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently
    • Must be able to communicate clearly with our guests in the primary language of the specific  location (Primarily English)
    • Hearing sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction
    • Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus

     WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    • Must be able to operate vehicles such as large trucks and golf carts
    • Exposed to weather conditions and prevalent temperature changes
    • Subject to moderate to high ambient noise levels
    • Frequently required to function in narrow aisles or passageways
