    Job Description

    Ancestry seeks a highly motivated Bioinformatics Intern to join our DNA Science team. The DNA Science team serves as a research and development group improving current and developing future Ancestry DNA tests. A diverse set of scientists (population geneticists, statistical geneticists, computational biologists) works closely with other organizations within Ancestry to help produce the most scientifically accurate, interesting direct-to-consumer DNA-based experience possible. As a bioinformatics intern on the DNA Science team you will work to develop new and interesting methods for discovering and annotating worldwide population structure. As part of the internship, you will have the opportunity to work with unique, large, and diverse datasets to help inform your discoveries.

    WHAT YOU’LL DO:

    • Collaborate with computational scientists and engineers to help further refine and improve the Ancestry DNA test.
    • Work as a data analyst, leveraging diverse datasets to make novel insights into different populations around the world.
    • Explore the intersection of genetic and non-genetic data in creating consumer facing products.

    WHO YOU ARE:

    • Currently pursuing a master’s or Ph.D. level degree in computational biology, bioinformatics, data science, computer science or related field.
    • Must be currently enrolled in a university and graduating after Summer 2019.
    • Strong computational background, with the skills and desire to handle and manipulate complex, diverse datasets.
    • Competency in at least one of the following programming languages, Python or R, and familiarity working in a Linux ecosystem.
    • Familiarity with basic statistical analyses.
    • Knowledge and experience with natural language processing methods and/or with “big-data” frameworks, e.g. Hadoop/Spark is desirable.
