FLSA: Hourly (Non-Exempt)
Hours: Monday – Friday from 8:00 AM – 4:15 PM
Reports to: Operations Supervisor
Overview
The Animal Wrangler is responsible for the daily care, health, and well-being of our reptiles and amphibians. Duties include feeding, behavior monitoring, enclosure cleaning, and customer guidance on species-appropriate care. The role demands strong attention to detail, compliance with safety and regulatory standards, and efficiency in a fast-paced setting.
Key Responsibilities
Animal Care & Husbandry
- Feed and provide water to reptiles and amphibians based on species-specific needs.
- Monitor health and behavior; promptly report abnormalities or illness.
- Maintain proper temperature, humidity, and lighting conditions.
- Ensure enclosures are species-appropriate and in optimal condition.
- Clean, disinfect, and maintain enclosures, dishes, and common areas.
- Track feeding schedules, health observations, and behavioral changes.
- Provide enrichment to encourage natural behaviors and well-being.
- Assist with breeding programs, incubation, and hatchling care as applicable.
Customer Service & Education
- Assist customers in selecting animals and required supplies.
- Provide guidance on habitat setup, feeding regimens, and handling.
- Educate customers on responsible ownership, lifespan, and challenges.
- Demonstrate proper handling and enclosure maintenance techniques.
- Respond to inquiries in person, by phone, and via email.
- Develop and share care sheets and educational materials.
Health & Safety Compliance
- Perform regular health checks; administer basic first aid if needed.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local animal care regulations.
- Maintain accurate health records, treatments, and veterinary visits.
- Follow OSHA and company safety protocols, including PPE.
- Implement biosecurity measures to prevent disease transmission.
- Handle animals safely to prevent stress or injury to animals and handlers.
Inventory & Facility Maintenance
- Monitor inventory levels of live animals, food, supplements, and supplies.
- Assist with ordering and restocking to ensure availability.
- Maintain records of received and sold animals with proper documentation.
- Inspect enclosures and equipment; report maintenance needs promptly.
- Keep workspaces, enclosures, and public areas clean and organized.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent (Required)
- Experience: 2+ Years of Reptile/amphibian care, husbandry, and customer service preferred.
- Technical: Microsoft Office, Inventory management (SKULabs), Morph Market, and POS systems (Shopify).
- Physical: Lift up to 40 lbs, stand for extended periods, and perform repetitive tasks.
- Attention to Detail: Track schedules, identify health concerns, maintain accurate records.
- Communication & Teamwork: Collaborate with colleagues and educate customers clearly.
- Problem-Solving & Adaptability: Troubleshoot habitat setups and evolving responsibilities.
Work Environment
- Warehouse and retail store setting with exposure to live animals, dust, and varying temperatures.
- Frequent lifting, bending, and handling of reptiles and amphibians.
- Use of protective gear (gloves, masks) as necessary.
- Regular interaction with customers, team members, and suppliers.
