We are a dynamic, established New York City-based apparel manufacturer specializing in the design and production of premium girls' pajamas and sleepwear. Our high-quality, comfort-focused products are distributed primarily through major off-price and discount retailers such as TJ Maxx and similar national chains. With a lean team of 20 employees and annual revenue of approximately $50 million, we pride ourselves on fabric innovation, reliable manufacturing partnerships, and delivering exceptional value to the mass market while maintaining strong retail relationships in a competitive industry.
We are seeking a hands-on Financial Controller to lead all accounting and financial operations for our growing apparel company. This is a full-time, in-office position located in the heart of Manhattan's Garment District (36th Street & 6th Avenue). The role blends traditional controllership responsibilities with fractional CFO-level strategic support, including financial forecasting, budgeting, and high-level decision-making guidance. You will be the primary finance leader reporting directly to ownership, operating in a fast-paced environment where your work directly impacts inventory management, cost control, and profitability in the girls' sleepwear market.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the full accounting cycle, including month-end close, general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and bank reconciliations for a 20-person organization.
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, management reports, KPIs, and variance analysis tailored to apparel-specific metrics (COGS, inventory turns, fabric costing, and retail channel profitability).
- Develop and maintain rolling financial forecasts, annual budgets, and cash-flow projections to support strategic growth and seasonal apparel production planning.
- Provide fractional CFO support to ownership, including ad-hoc financial modeling, pricing analysis, vendor negotiations, and scenario planning for new retail opportunities or product lines.
- Manage inventory costing and valuation, ensuring accurate tracking of raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished goods in line with apparel industry standards.
- Oversee compliance with tax filings, sales tax, and financial regulations; coordinate with external accountants, auditors, and lenders as needed.
- Implement and improve financial systems, controls, and processes (ERP, QuickBooks, or similar) to scale efficiently with our $50M revenue operation.
- Analyze manufacturing and supply-chain costs, identify savings opportunities, and support margin improvement initiatives for our TJ Maxx-style distribution model.
- Lead or support banking relationships, credit facilities, and working-capital management in a seasonal business.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with design, production, and sales teams to provide financial insights that drive business decisions.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA, CMA, or MBA strongly preferred.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3–5 years as a Controller (or equivalent) in apparel, fashion, manufacturing, or consumer goods.
- Proven experience providing fractional CFO or strategic financial advisory support to small-to-mid-size companies ($20M–$100M revenue).
- Strong technical skills in financial forecasting, budgeting, inventory accounting, and Excel modeling; familiarity with apparel-specific ERP systems is a plus.
- Deep understanding of retail off-price channels, seasonal inventory dynamics, and cost accounting in garment production.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills; comfortable operating in a small-team environment and presenting to ownership.
- Must be willing and able to work fully in-office at our 36th & 6th Avenue location in Manhattan (no remote or hybrid option).
Compensation
****The base salary for this role is $125,000 – $150,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications. We also offer comprehensive healthcare benefits (medical, dental, and vision coverage), paid time off, and performance-based bonuses tied to company results. This is a rare opportunity to play a true strategic finance role in a stable, $50M apparel business with direct impact on growth.
If you are a proactive financial leader who thrives in an in-office, hands-on environment and wants to help shape the future of a girls' sleepwear brand sold nationwide, we encourage you to apply.
