    Job Title: Observatory Technician Reports to: Principal Scientist

    FLSA Status: Part-Time (Non-Exempt) 1st/2nd Shift Department: Space Science

    Position Objective:

    Applied Optimization is an engineering R&D firm performing space observations and atmospheric research using telescopes and laser ranging in the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum

    Meticulous, detail-oriented individual who brings consistent quality and reliability to the collection and archiving of sensor data and maintenance of scientific equipment

    This is a challenging position with direct hands-on responsibility for ensuring safe telescope and laser operations

    Conscientious worker that is a self-starter with excellent concentration skills

    The position is part-time and year-round. The hours are flexible and they can change from one week to another, sometimes on short notice. This position is primarily second shift hours and will be located at our observatory site near Springfield, OH

    Essential Functions:

    Support the collection, reduction, and calibration of astronomical data

    Support the engineering staff with modifications of telescope equipment and astronomical instrumentation

    Support the science and engineering staff conducting astronomy experiments to fulfill customer requirements

    Follow procedures for telescope and astronomical sensor operations

    Perform aircraft spotting duties to ensure laser illuminations comply with FAA and LCH regulations and guidelines

    Follow all written and oral instructions related to laser operations

    Assist in the management and monitoring of government property including support of internal and external audits

    Support the reduction and processing of image data supporting science objectives of various projects

    Follow operational procedures for all work accurately; maintain notebook of daily activities and provide weekly report of work. Provide daily activity reports to the observatory director.

    Other duties as assigned

    Required Qualifications:

    Associate degree in physical sciences, mechanical engineering technology, or related field with a superior academic record

    Strong interest in astronomy and telescopes

    Flexible schedule; ability to work outside during nighttime hours in a variety of weather conditions

    Ability to travel at night to observatory site near Springfield, OH

    Distant Visual Acuity (vision) corrected to 20/20, normal visual fields, and no pathology of the eye

    Effective oral communication skills, especially over short-range radio

    Adequate hearing for use of short-range radio communications

    Ability to stand for a minimum of 50 minutes at a time with 10-minute breaks.

    Ability to gaze upward for extended periods of time

    Ability to judge distances of objects in the sky

    Attention to detail and effective time and schedule management skills

    Effective organizing, planning, and problem-solving skills

    Ability to adapt within a small team to support evolving customer requirements

    Ability to execute instructions and communication in written, oral, and diagram form

    Demonstrated strong writing, fact-gathering, and analytical skills

    Basic computer and software skills including but not necessarily limited to Microsoft Office products (e.g., Outlook, Word, and Power Point)

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Associate degree in areas such as optical systems, laser technology, automation and control technology, computer-aided manufacturing, mechatronics, or similar with a superior academic record

    Demonstrated interest in astronomy, physics, or engineering; or equivalent years of experience

    Knowledge or experience with astronomical hardware and software, such as telescope mounts, cameras, and image-capture software

    o Working knowledge of computers and digital recording of sensor data, such as CCDs

    Knowledge or experience in astronomical data collection, reduction, and calibration

    Knowledge or experience in navigating astronomical coordinate systems and the night sky

    Citizenship/Security Clearance Requirements:

    U.S. Citizen or Green Card Holder
