MAJOR FUNCTION: THE SUPERVISING DENTIST IS HOUSED WITHIN THE DENTAL HYGIENE CLINIC ON MAIN CAMPUS. The presence of a supervising dentist on the floor of the Dental Hygiene Clinic during all clinic sessions is essential. The supervising dentist will be on the clinic floor for the entire clinic session or until all patients have been dismissed. Patients are referred for care to their dentist of record, or We Care, Bond Community Health Center, LCHD, etc. Medical consultations are required for a number of systemic complications. The supervising dentist will evaluate histories and request medical consultation, guiding the dental hygiene student in completion of the form. In addition, any suspicious lesions detected, at future appointments, are examined by the dentist and a differential diagnosis is provided. The dentist oversees documentation on patient records for quality assurance in patient care, and accuracy in documentation according to the legal/medical “Standards of Care”. Reads and initials the “Patient Daily Record Review” at the end of each appointment. Brings any discrepancies to the attention of the student or instructor who treated the patient. The dentist reads/interprets all dental x-rays exposed in the dental clinic and provides quality control for all operators’ techniques, as well as the proper functioning of the x-ray machines.
