    THE PROJECT

    The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) is a research project which records, publishes and analyses disaggregated data on violent political conflict. These data are publicly available, along with analysis and information about the project, at www.acleddata.com. These data are used for a range of purposes, from academic research on dynamics of conflict to informing diplomatic policy, and humanitarian and development work in conflict-affected contexts.

    THE ROLE

    ACLED is recruiting a RESEARCH CONSULTANT to contribute to ACLED's work on gender. This is a short term (1.5 months anticipated), part time, contract position.

    The RESEARCH CONSULTANT will be supervised by the Research Director. The RESEARCH CONSULTANT will support the development of a reliable set of gendered indicators of instability and conflict. In this project ACLED will lead statistical testing on the indicators. To this end, they will be responsible for the following core tasks:

    • Provide research assistance to the Research Director by running a logistic regression model to evaluate the relationship between violent outcomes and the indicators, as well as testing the predictive capabilities of the indicators;
    • Support the Research Director to summarize the findings and produce a written report.

    SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

    The following experience and abilities are MANDATORY:

    • Fluency in English
    • Graduate degree in conflict, political violence, or related field
    • 3-5 years of experience manipulating large datasets (e.g. wrangling messy data, data cleaning, prepping data for analysis, etc.) and building and testing statistical models
    • Knowledge of statistical packages for conducting quantitative analysis
    • Significant experience running predictive models
    • Strong writing and editing skills
    • Strong critical thinking and analysis skills
    • An extremely high level of attention to detail
    • Ability to work remotely and meet deadlines with limited supervision (experience working in a remote environment preferred)
    • Flexible team player, especially across a remote, global team
    • Familiarity with the academic literature around conflict and political violence
    • Experience conducting desk-based research
