The ARMED CONFLICT LOCATION & EVENT DATA PROJECT (ACLED) is a disaggregated conflict collection, analysis and crisis mapping project. ACLED collects the dates, actors, types of violence, locations, and fatalities of all reported political violence and protest events across Africa, South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. ACLED's aim is to capture the forms, actors, dates and locations of political violence and protest as it occurs across states. The ACLED team conducts analysis to describe, explore and test conflict scenarios, and makes both data and analysis open and free for use by the public.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

ACLED is launching an internship program designed for undergraduate and graduate students seeking an internship placement for university credit. Depending on their experience and interest, interns will work with ACLED's Research team to support data sourcing, collection, cleaning and management on key ACLED pilots. For the Spring/Summer 2019 interns the focus with be on an exciting three month pilot focused on expanding ACLED's data collection to the United States ahead of the 2020 presidential elections. 

Collection of data is conducted by reviewing international, regional and local news, NGO and security reports, and recording the incidents of political violence into an Excel template. Cleaning and management of data involves ensuring the quality, consistency and reliability of the data produced. Candidates who are selected will undergo extensive ACLED training, gaining a deep understanding of ACLED's methodology as well as best practices in data management.

TERMS

Internships will last 3 to 6 months depending on the requirements of the student's academic program and their availability. The roles will require 20 hours per week and may begin from May 2019 (start dates will vary). All candidates must receive university credit for internships. ACLED does not provide a stipend to interns. All work will be conducted remotely.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

ACLED is seeking students who have the following skills and experience:

• Familiarity with Excel;
• Fluency in English;
• Experience conducting desk-based research;
• Experience working to deadlines with limited supervision;
• A high level of attention to detail and ability to receive and incorporate feedback;
• Professional experience or coursework and interest in conflict research/studies;
• Skills to produce quantitative and qualitative analytical pieces and visualization of data (preferred).
