    GENERAL SUMMARY

We are seeking a Computer Systems Storage Engineer to build, maintain and troubleshoot the expanding infrastructure of the Huntsville Operations Support Center (HOSC). HOSC provides engineering, operations and maintenance, system development services, and tools for the International Space Station and Space Launch System. You will be part of a talented team of systems engineers that demonstrates superb technical competency in the delivery of mission critical infrastructure to ensure 24x7x365 availability, while continuously improving capability, performance and security. Systems Engineering Team responsibilities consist of design, requirement definition, deployment, and maintenance of computer ground systems and services including voice, video, storage, and telemetry subsystems. Qualified systems engineers will have formal education or certification in systems engineering or other engineering discipline.

At NASA, “systems engineering” is defined as a methodical, multi-disciplinary approach for the design, realization, technical management, operations, and retirement of a system. A “system” is the combination of elements that function together to produce the capability required to meet a need. The elements include all hardware, software, equipment, facilities, personnel, processes, and procedures needed for this purpose; that is, all things required to produce system-level results. The results include system-level qualities, properties, characteristics, functions, behavior, and performance. The value added by the system as a whole, beyond that contributed independently by the parts, is primarily created by the relationship among the parts; that is, how they are interconnected. It is a way of looking at the “big picture” when making technical decisions. It is a way of achieving stakeholder functional, physical, and operational performance requirements in the intended use environment over the planned life of the system within cost, schedule, and other constraints. It is a methodology that supports the containment of the life cycle cost of a system. In other words, systems engineering is a logical way of thinking.

    Principal Duties and Responsibilities

    • Develop expertise to serve as subject matter expert for long term data storage and retrieval utilizing Storage Area Networks (SAN), Network Attached Storage, Server Storage, and robotic tape storage systems. MSFC Ground Systems and Services data storage systems have an availability requirement of .9999.
    • Develop expertise to serve as subject matter expert for MSFC Ground Systems and Services System Backup Infrastructure, including Netbackup and log capture (LogRhythm) tools and related administrative storage systems. This infrastructure is used to backup virtual server images, critical application storage, mission support and mission operations databases, build images, patch libraries, non-virtualized server images, physical desktop computers and virtual desktop images.
    • Develop expertise to serve as Storage Engineer to lead the development of the concept of operations and resulting storage system architecture, defining boundaries, identifying use cases, defining, allocating and tracing requirements, evaluating design tradeoffs, balancing technical risk between storage systems, defining and assessing interfaces and providing insight to verification and validation activities.
    • Develop expertise to provide a Long Term Storage Strategy / Plan and Monthly Storage Reports including disk storage space utilization, storage performance characteristics, and anomaly characterization.
    • Develop expertise to lead the technical planning effort, with primary responsibility for documenting technical plans, requirements and specification documentation, design documentation and certification packages.
    • Provide professional oral and written project plans and status to NASA customers and HOSC management.
    • Develop expertise to serve as Project Manager in support of Project Planning and Control by providing accurate and timely cost and schedule information for technical activities.
    • Examine on a continual basis the risks of technical deviations from the plans, and identify potential technical problems before they occur. Plan, invoke, and perform risk-handling activities as needed across the life of the product or project to mitigate impacts on meeting cost, schedule and performance objectives.
    • Evaluate technical issues, identify decision criteria, identify alternatives, analyze alternatives, select alternatives, and make recommendations to management.
    • Monitor progress of the technical effort and provide status information for support of the storage system design, product realization, and technical management efforts.
    • Manage and monitor installed systems and infrastructure, and identify improvements through data analysis.
    • Collaborate with and coordinate efforts of an integrated product team in the performance of assigned projects.
    • Develop expertise to monitor and test for potential performance bottlenecks and other issues, identify potential solutions, and work with the technical staff and vendors to implement those solutions.
    • Evaluate vendor capabilities to provide required products or services.
    • Support Operations and Maintenance, including checkout of new capabilities at transition, determining configuration changes based on new mission objectives, and resolving anomalies in storage infrastructure behavior.
