    Position Summary

The Artist (Barber) provides technically excellent barbering and grooming services in a premium, hospitality-led environment. The role combines licensed service delivery, personalized consultation, sanitation, guest education, accurate service records, and active contribution to shop goals.

    Essential Responsibilities

Consult with each guest about desired result, hair and scalp considerations, maintenance, product preferences, and service history; confirm the plan before beginning.

Perform authorized barbering services with consistent technical quality, including haircuts, clipper and scissor work, beard and mustache grooming, shaving, shampooing, styling, and related services within licensed scope.

Assess whether a requested service is appropriate; decline or pause services when contraindications, infection concerns, skin conditions, safety risks, or scope-of-practice limits are present, and involve management when needed.

Use approved tools, products, draping, infection-control practices, and manufacturer instructions; clean and disinfect the station and reusable implements between guests and dispose of single-use items correctly.

Keep service notes and guest preferences accurate in the approved system; protect guest privacy and never divert shop guests to personal booking or payment channels.

Manage appointment time responsibly, communicate delays early, and coordinate with Concierge to protect guest flow and service recovery.

Recommend appropriate home-care products, rebooking intervals, memberships, and additional services based on genuine guest needs.

Maintain tools, equipment, station supplies, linens, and inventory; report damage, shortages, or unsafe conditions promptly.

Participate in education, technique calibration, model work, team meetings, and required compliance or safety training.

Responsibilities Shared by Every Team Member

Deliver a polished, welcoming, and respectful experience from arrival through departure.

Follow assigned schedules, attendance and call-out procedures; be ready to work at the scheduled start time.

Record all working time accurately and never perform off-the-clock work.

Protect guest, employee, payment, and business information; use only approved systems and communication channels.

Support rebooking, membership, retail, and service goals through accurate, guest-centered recommendations without pressure.

Maintain clean, organized shared areas and complete assigned opening, closing, laundry, stocking, and shop-care tasks.

Communicate respectfully, collaborate across roles, and promptly elevate guest concerns, safety issues, injuries, suspected misconduct, or operational problems.

Follow the Employee Handbook, Standards of Conduct and Operations, Avon Location Addendum, training, safety rules, and lawful management direction.

    Licensure and Scope

Maintain a current, active Connecticut barber license—and any additional credential required for assigned services—before performing regulated work. Perform only services allowed by law, license, training, and shop authorization.

    Minimum Qualifications

Current, active Connecticut barber license in good standing; additional credentials as required for any assigned service.

Demonstrated proficiency in barbering consultation, cutting, fading, styling, beard work, and sanitation appropriate to the services assigned.

Guest-service judgment, reliability, attention to detail, and ability to receive coaching and work as part of a coordinated team.

Ability to use booking/POS and guest-record systems after training.

[Preferred experience level, portfolio requirements, and required specialty certifications].

    Physical and Work Environment

Regularly stand and move throughout scheduled service periods; use hands and arms for detailed, repetitive grooming work.

Safely handle barbering tools, approved chemicals/products, hot towels, and sanitation materials in accordance with training.

Ability to position equipment and supplies and lift/carry [management to confirm weight] with or without reasonable accommodation.

Frequent close interaction with guests in a salon/barbershop environment with hair, fragrances, cleaning products, noise, and varied temperatures.

Hammer & Nails Avon will consider reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities as required by applicable law. Physical-demand language should be confirmed against how the job is actually performed before approval or posting.

    Performance and Success Measures

Performance may be assessed using communicated, job-related measures such as:

    Guest satisfaction and retention

Service quality, timing, rebooking, and utilization

    Retail and membership contribution

Sanitation, licensing, documentation, and policy compliance

Attendance, teamwork, training, and shop-care contribution

Any goals, incentive measures, or disciplinary standards must be administered consistently and in accordance with the separately approved compensation plan and applicable law.
