SUMMARY:
The Asphalt Plant Supervisor, reporting to the Asphalt Plant Manager, is responsible for the overall daily operation and production of asphalt. This leadership role drives efficiency for both internal and external customers while championing safety, quality control, and operational excellence across the facilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Safety Leadership
Promote and strictly enforce safe work practices, adhering to all OSHA/MSHA regulations.
Conduct regular safety meetings, plant inspections, and audits.
Work with safety and maintenance teams to ensure a secure work environment for all personnel.
Quality & Mix Design
Develop and implement operational Best Management Practices (BMPs) and create asphalt mix designs based on project specifications.
Coordinate material testing with technical services and plant personnel during production runs.
Monitor test results continuously to ensure compliance with specifications, mitigating risks of penalties and project delays.
Support continuous improvement initiatives to uphold high-quality standards.
Site Management & Production Operations
Supervise the operations of 6-8 asphalt plant facilities, including day and night shifts, along with supporting aggregate platform sites and associated personnel.
Manage the supply chain, including sourcing and purchasing materials, to optimize quality, control costs, and ensure timely delivery.
Prepare plant budgets and develop material pricing strategies for all customers.
Coordinate production schedules, plant maintenance, portable aggregate crushing/washing needs, and necessary resources (personnel, equipment, materials) for safe and efficient operations.
Oversee all daily asphalt production during the construction season, providing direction and support to plant personnel on the implementation of operations plans.
Process invoices, accurately allocating costs to plants or projects, and conduct monthly cost reviews to maintain budget compliance.
Lead recruiting efforts: identify staffing needs, participate in candidate selection, and manage the new hire onboarding process.
Develop and execute training programs for new hires, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
Collaborate with the land resources department to secure all necessary operating permits.
Coordinate plant site work, including site preparation, inventory management, and maintenance, to ensure a clean, professional, and smoothly running operation.
Manage and oversee all necessary subcontractors working at the asphalt plant facilities.
Execute all other projects related to asphalt plant operations as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
A strong commitment to safety, including detailed knowledge of OSHA/MSHA regulations, compliance, and the inspection process.
High school diploma; a BS in an engineering or similar field is a plus.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Proven ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
Intermediate proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Ability to travel locally and regionally as required.
Demonstrated strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities concurrently.
Preferred Experience
Three (3) or more years of comprehensive experience in the asphalt industry, covering all facets of day-to-day operations: safety, specifications, budgeting, cost management, permitting, production, maintenance, rolling stock equipment, and quality control.
Experience with HCSS HeavyJob and HeavyBid software.
Familiarity with AutoCAD or similar design software.
Prior experience in planning, scheduling, and supervising production shifts.
Previous experience managing subcontractors.
