Job Description
The Investment Company Institute (ICI) is the leading association representing regulated investment funds, including mutual funds, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), closed-end funds, and unit investment trusts (UITs) in the United States, and UCITS and similar funds offered to investors in Europe, Asia, and other jurisdictions. ICI also represents its members on issues involving the capital markets, separately managed accounts (SMAs) and collective investment trusts (CITs). ICI’s mission is to strengthen the foundation of the asset management industry for the ultimate benefit of the long-term individual investor.
The Assistant/Associate General Counsel - Financial Regulation position represents ICI on securities and financial services issues and policy initiatives, including relevant regulation and legislation. Helps to coordinate and integrate the Law Department’s efforts with ICI’s research, government affairs, operations, and strategic communications functions to advance ICI’s positions and initiatives. Represents and advises ICI on matters affecting the industry before the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), other federal agencies, self-regulatory organizations (e.g., FINRA), Congress, states, and other policymakers.
Essential functions of this role include:
Advocates on members’ behalf on investment management matters involving the SEC, other federal agencies, self-regulatory organizations, Congress, states, and other policymakers, including through:
Written comment letters, testimony, and other materials; and
Calls, meetings. and other oral presentations.
Educates and assists members with regulatory implementation and compliance efforts, including by and through:
Leading and organizing meetings and calls of standing ICI committees and working groups focusing on specific disciplines (e.g., legal issues generally) or subject matter (e.g., disclosure or advertising);
Communicating significant industry developments to members and others through memoranda, other documents, and member calls; and
Developing and participating (e.g., as moderator or panelist) at ICI conferences, webinars, and workshops.
Collaborates regularly and effectively with other ICI staff, including with:
Research staff on data and other empirical analyses;
Strategic Communications staff in developing accurate and effective communications (e.g., press releases, social media posts, blogs, and other public statements);
Independent Directors Council in advancing its mission and objectives;
Government Affairs staff to analyze, comment on, and develop legislative proposals;
Operations staff on shared matters of interest;
ICI Global on regulatory and legislative matters outside the United States;
Administrative support staff to ensure execution of all of the above.
May coordinate with:
Relevant professional and industry organizations, as ICI’s liaison; and
Outside legal counsel retained to assist ICI on regulatory and legal matters.

Compensation is based on several factors, including but not limited to, qualifications for the position, experience, education, and internal peer compensation comparisons. Base pay is one component of ICI’s total compensation, which also includes healthcare benefits, generous 401(k) plan, transit subsidy, and paid leave.
