Skagway Brewing Company is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Brewer to support all brewery operations. The Assistant Brewer works closely with the Head Brewer and brewing team, supporting day-to-day production while helping ensure the consistent quality, safety, and efficiency of all brewing, cellar, packaging, and draft operations.

This is a hands-on role for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, physical environment and takes pride in precision, cleanliness, and teamwork. The ideal candidate demonstrates a strong work ethic, passion for craft beer, and respect for safety and sanitation standards. This is a seasonal, full-time position averaging 45 hours per week during the cruise season, with schedule flexibility required based on production needs. This position reports directly to the Head Brewer.

    Responsibilities of the Assistant Brewer

Support all aspects of brewery production including brewing, cellar work, packaging, draft systems, and deliveries.

Perform cellar operations including CIP of tanks and equipment, beer transfers from fermenters to brite tanks, and carbonation.

Assist with brewing on a 10 BBL brewhouse (5 × 10 BBL fermenters and 2 × 15 BBL fermenters for Spruce Tip Blonde).

Handle grain receiving, milling, yeast harvesting and handling, dry hopping, and spruce tip steeping.

Clean, sanitize, fill, and maintain kegs using a 2-head hands-on keg washer.

Operate a single-head counter-pressure bottling system for 22 oz bottles for the pub, gift shop, and off-premise accounts.

Clean and maintain draft beer lines company-wide, including Skagway Brewing Company, Salty Siren, jockey boxes, and off-site events.

Support quality assurance procedures, including CO₂ testing; willingness to learn yeast cell counting using a microscope and hemocytometer.

Work safely at all times, wear appropriate PPE, and follow all brewhouse safety protocols.

Maintain a clean, organized, and sanitary work environment; report unresolved issues to the Head Brewer.

Assist with inventory management of raw materials, CIP chemicals, and brewery supplies.

Support brewery and pub cleaning and maintenance projects as needed.

Deliver beer to company locations and accounts as required; must be comfortable driving company vehicles.

Collaborate with the brewing team on recipe development and special brewing projects.

Assist with brewery events, tours, and public-facing activities if needed (occasionally).

Work with the Head Brewer to help spearhead — and eventually manage — root beer and hard seltzer production programs.

Lead with a positive attitude and team-first mindset — after all, we’re making beer, and beer puts smiles on people’s faces.

    Qualifications

Prior brewery experience required; 1–3 years preferred.

Formal brewing education is a plus but not required.

Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail related to beer quality, sanitation, and safety.

Self-starter with the ability to work independently, manage time efficiently, and take initiative.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; must be a team player.

Ability to lift 55 lbs (grain bags) and move kegs using hand trucks and pallet jacks; forklift experience is a plus but not required.

Ability to work flexible hours and days as required by production needs (most shifts between 7:00 AM–5:00 PM).

Must be 21 years or older and hold a valid driver’s license.

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check, in accordance with applicable law.
