Assistant Controller (Senior Accountant)
Location: Nipomo, CA (Onsite)
Reports To: Corporate Controller
Salary Range: $100,000 – $125,000
Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to support the accounting operations of our companies. This role is based on site in Nipomo, CA and is ideal for an experienced accounting professional who thrives in a hands-on environment and takes full ownership of their responsibilities.
This is a high-impact role requiring an independent thinker who can identify issues, develop solutions, and execute without constant direction. The Assistant Controller will lead key accounting processes, oversee transactional teams, and deliver accurate, timely financial reporting to senior leadership. Strong communication and the ability to collaborate across departments are critical to success.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Close
- Own and execute monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes for assigned entities
- Prepare and review journal entries, including accruals, amortizations, and adjustments
- Maintain integrity of the general ledger and ensure accurate transactional flow
- Perform detailed account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, including application of ASC 606 (revenue recognition) and ASC 842 (leases) where applicable
Construction & Inventory Accounting
- Support and enhance construction-style accounting processes, including job costing and WIP schedules
- Ensure accurate inventory accounting and cost tracking across operations
- Partner with operations to validate project costs, margins, and financial accuracy
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare monthly Financial Reporting Packages (FRP), including:
- Profit & Loss statements
- Balance Sheets
- Variance analysis with clear, actionable commentary
- Analyze financial results, identify trends, and communicate insights to leadership
- Support budgeting and forecasting processes as needed
Leadership & Process Ownership
- Oversee Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions, including management of AP and AR Managers
- Take a hands-on approach to resolving escalated issues within AP/AR (billing discrepancies, collections challenges, vendor issues, etc.)
- Drive accountability, improve workflows, and enhance efficiency across accounting operations
- Act as a key liaison between accounting, operations, and senior leadership
Systems & Process Improvement
- Utilize ERP systems (Acumatica, NetSuite, Sage, or similar) to manage and improve accounting processes
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability
- Leverage advanced Excel capabilities to support reporting and analysis
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with project managers, operations teams, and leadership to ensure accurate financial data
- Communicate proactively regarding issues, risks, and opportunities
- Build strong relationships across departments to support business objectives
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 4-6+ years of progressive accounting experience (construction or project-based accounting strongly preferred)
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and accrual-based accounting
- Experience with month-end close, general ledger management, and financial reporting
- Experience in construction, project-based, or inventory-driven environments strongly preferred
- Familiarity with ASC 606 (revenue recognition) and ASC 842 (leases)
- Experience working in ERP systems (Acumatica, NetSuite, Sage, or similar)
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (e.g., XLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, nested formulas, data analysis)
- Ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines
Preferred
- Experience supervising or managing accounting staff (AP/AR or similar functions)
- Experience with job costing, WIP schedules, and construction accounting workflows
- Exposure to budgeting, forecasting, or financial planning & analysis
