    Controller

    StaffBuffalo is working with a respected professional services organization in Buffalo, NY that is seeking a Controller paying $80,000 - $105,000  to support its growing accounting function. This role partners closely with the Director of Finance to manage daily accounting operations while ensuring accuracy across billing, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and general ledger activities.

    The Controller will oversee financial reporting, support audits, manage trust accounting processes, and help identify opportunities to improve efficiency through reporting tools and technology. This role is ideal for an experienced accounting professional who enjoys taking ownership of the accounting function, collaborating with a team, strengthening processes, and supporting an organization as it continues to scale its financial operations.

    Responsibilities

    • Oversee daily accounting operations across accounts receivable, billing, accounts payable, and general ledger functions
    • Lead month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities, ensuring accurate financial reporting
    • Review transactions, journal entries, and reconciliations for accuracy and proper classification
    • Prepare financial statements and reports to support leadership decision-making
    • Manage trust accounting processes and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (IOLTA)
    • Work with external auditors by preparing documentation, reports, and supporting schedules during audit processes
    • Develop and maintain reports and dashboards using Excel to present financial data clearly for leadership
    • Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows, processes, and reporting through automation and technology
    • Monitor accounts receivable, billing activity, and collections trends
    • Collaborate with internal accounting staff and outsourced partners to ensure smooth financial operations

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related business field
    • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
    • Strong understanding of financial statements, general ledger activity, and accounting principles
    • Experience with month-end close and financial reporting
    • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills including pivot tables, formulas, and data analysis
    • Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret financial data and present findings clearly
    • Professional services, legal, or trust accounting experience is helpful but not required
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to work collaboratively within a team
