    Assistant Starters play a vital role in ensuring a smooth and safe start for all races at Wyoming Downs Racing. They are responsible for handling horses at the starting gate, assisting with schooling sessions, and ensuring compliance with all safety regulations. In addition to their starter duties, Assistant Starters at Wyoming Downs also serve as Valets, assisting jockeys with their equipment and ensuring an efficient pre-race preparation process.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Starter Duties:

    • Assist in loading horses into the starting gate, ensuring they are properly positioned for a fair start.
    • Handle difficult or fractious horses to maintain safety for jockeys and other race participants.
    • Work closely with the Starter to identify and assist horses that need additional gate schooling.
    • Help enforce proper gate procedures and report any concerns regarding horse behavior.
    • Ensure that the starting gate area remains safe and orderly during races and training sessions.
    • Maintain professionalism and clear communication with jockeys, trainers, and racing officials.
    • Must be on time and prepared for all scheduled races and training sessions.
    • Whoever is assigned to drive the gate truck must comply with a strict no smoking policy when in public view or inside any company vehicle.

    Valet Duties:

    • Assist jockeys with saddling, equipment, and gear preparation before races.
    • Ensure that each jockey has the correct silks, boots, and other necessary race gear.
    • Help maintain organization in the jockeys' room and ensure an efficient pre-race process.
    • Clean and maintain riding equipment and assist in the proper storage of gear.
    • Ensure jockeys are on schedule and prepared for their races.
    • Assist with post-race procedures, including unsaddling and proper storage of equipment.

    Qualifications:

    • Experience handling racehorses, particularly in high-pressure situations such as the starting gate.
    • Strong understanding of horse behavior and safety procedures.
    • Ability to work in close quarters with horses and react quickly to potential issues.
    • Familiarity with jockey equipment and race preparation procedures.
    • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with the Starter, jockeys, and racing officials.
    • Professional demeanor and adherence to all track regulations, including dress code requirements.
    • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and maintain physical endurance.
