Leigh & Dougherty Family Law is seeking an experienced Associate Attorney to join our growing family law practice. For over a decade, our firm has built a reputation as a trusted leader in complex family law matters throughout New Mexico, practicing thoughtful, strategic advocacy that helps clients move forward rather than a scorched-earth approach. As an Associate Attorney at Leigh & Dougherty Family Law, you will manage family law matters from intake through resolution with the support of experienced partners and a well-established support team. This is a producing attorney role designed for someone who has already practiced law and is ready to step into meaningful responsibility while continuing to grow their skills and practice. You will be trusted to manage your cases, exercise sound judgment, and collaborate effectively with guidance available when needed, but without micromanagement. Compensation • Base Salary: $130,000 • Paid time off • Performance-based bonus Responsibilities: Core Legal & Client Responsibilities • Manage a caseload of family law matters with increasing independence • Conduct client intake meetings and develop case strategies • Communicate clearly and professionally with clients while setting realistic expectations • Draft, review, and file pleadings, motions, discovery, and related legal documents • Prepare clients for hearings, mediations, and court appearances • Appear in court and represent clients confidently and professionally Case Strategy & Resolution • Analyze opposing counsel's filings and develop appropriate responses • Negotiate settlements and draft settlement agreements when appropriate • Prepare cases for mediation, hearings, or trial as needed • Identify issues early and move cases forward efficiently Collaboration & Firm Operations • Work closely with paralegals and support staff to delegate tasks effectively • Provide clear direction on case priorities and deadlines • Participate in internal case reviews or strategy discussions • Follow firm systems, processes, and documentation standards Professional Accountability • Manage deadlines, workload, and production responsibly • Track billable time or production metrics accurately • Maintain ethical standards and professional conduct at all times • Accept feedback and coaching with a growth-oriented mindset Qualifications: • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school • Licensed and in good standing with the New Mexico Bar (or ability to become licensed promptly) • 2–5 years of legal experience preferred (family law experience is a plus, but not required) • Prior experience speaking with clients, filing pleadings, and appearing in court • Emotionally steady, professional, and resilient under pressure • Strong communication, organization, and time-management skills • Self-motivated and comfortable working independently Compensation: $130,000 yearly
