    Role Overview:

    We are seeking an Entry-Level Communications Engineer to join the engineering team supporting the development of autonomous, self-propelled rail vehicles. This role will focus on supporting the definition, design, and implementation of the communication layers necessary for the interaction between the tablet controller, edge/site server, and the trains. You will contribute to defining the required hardware, software, and networking layers for these critical communication pathways. This position will be based out of St. Louis, MO.

    Position Responsibilities:

    • Support the design and definition of communication architectures and protocols for rail vehicle systems.
    • Assist in specifying hardware components related to vehicle communication systems.
    • Contribute to the development and integration of software modules for communication between system components (tablet, server, train)
    • Help define networking requirements and configurations for reliable system operation.
    • Participate in testing and validation efforts to ensure communication systems meet operational and functional requirements.
    • Collaborate with multi-disciplinary engineering teams, including electrical, mechanical, and software engineers.
    • Support problem-solving and lifecycle support for fielded communication systems.
    • Assist in researching technological advancements related to communication systems for potential application
    • Participate in design and peer reviews.

    About You:

    Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

    • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
    • 0-2 years of experience with communication systems, networking, or related engineering projects (including academic or internship experience).
    • Basic understanding of networking concepts (e.g., TCP/IP, wireless communication).
    • Familiarity with software development concepts (e.g., object-oriented programming).
    • Willingness to expand into technical areas beyond your area of expertise; ability to develop innovative and novel approaches.
    • Open-minded and comfortable working in a teaming environment or as an individual contributor.
    • Fluent in both written and verbal English.
    • U.S. Person (immigration or work visa sponsorship will not be provided).

    Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

    • Experience with specific communication protocols (e.g., CAN bus, Ethernet, RF) or interfaces.
    • Coursework or projects focused on embedded systems communication or network programming.
    • Experience with debugging and testing communication systems.
    • Experience with software version control tools such as git.
    • Experience in directly applicable industry or projects, such as Rail, Electric Vehicles, or Unmanned Systems. (Note: less experience expected for entry level).
    • Experience with Linux TCP/IP stack networking, such as Yocto, OpenWRT, and Debian.

    Typical Education and Experience:

    Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 0-2 years' related work experience or relevant project experience.
