WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?
The Fellowship Program’s Associate Network Administrator installs, troubleshoots, and maintains the data communication (mainframe, local area, and wide area networks) and telecommunication networks. Serves as technical specialist responsible for, monitoring, operating, and troubleshooting network and security status of any component comprising the assigned customer’s networks, systems, and software. Works as a member of the Network Operations and Security Center (NOSC) team providing 24x7 operations and security monitoring for client.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and assists in researching, planning, designing, and optimizing the data communication and telecommunication networks, which includes mainframe networks, local area networks (LAN), wide area networks (WAN), data and telecommunication cabling systems (coax, twisted-pair, fiber optic and wireless), telephone equipment and PBX systems. Participates in the integration of various corporate networks to create a seamless environment.
Perform pro-active monitoring of system and network element alarms and alerts to identify those components/elements that may lead to, or already are causing degradation or failure.
Perform security monitoring and management, fault isolation and diagnostic functions to include determination and execution of corrective actions on a real-time basis. Use network and system management platforms to remotely access and analyze systems, nodes, and devices to identify resolutions to correct anomalies.
Troubleshoots PC, technical workstation, terminal, printer, control unit, modem, multiplexer, telephone, fax and PBX system problems, and standard supported PC software (operating systems as well as application software).
Provides training to the Desktop Services and other staff regarding data and telecommunication issues and provides support to assigned customer in troubleshooting communication systems.
Maintains inventory in conjunction with the Desktop Services Section of installed hardware and software and insures adequate maintenance coverage.
Document data and telecommunication networks, network servers, software, and service configurations. Update and maintains configuration tables and drawings. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of IT, security, telecommunications, products, trends, and directions.
Analyze network traffic data, throughput, reliability, and other characteristics related to efficient operation and support of networks and systems.
Identifies and evaluates hardware and software, and recommends standards and procedures. This involves contacts with vendors and other corporations, participating in inter-divisional teams, and individual research and development.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge of a wide range of communications concepts, principles and practices as well as understanding of communications equipment including: IP routers, switches, firewalls, Local and Wide Area Network (LAN/WAN) components and other communications-oriented sub systems.
Knowledge of the principles of information technology normally acquired through college level courses or equivalent experience.
Knowledge of trouble ticketing systems and performance/trend analysis tools.
Knowledge of other major areas of telecommunications such as cryptographic systems, computer security and access control systems/procedures.
Knowledge of data and telecommunications hardware, software, including supported software and network configurations.
Knowledge of supported personal computer (PC) and technical workstation system and application software.
Working knowledge of IBM’s operating system and data communications concepts and operation.
Working knowledge of network operating systems (e.g., Windows 95/98, Windows NT).
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:
Technical training and interest in continuing to develop their skills with data and telecommunications hardware and network installation, administration, and troubleshooting.
Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
Ability to effectively communicate with peers, users and management using verbal and written communication.
Analytical, organizational, and conceptual skills capable of handling multiple tasks and assignments simultaneously.
Strong interpersonal skills to influence and persuade various groups or individuals.
Aptitude for learning with ability to identify problems and desire to find solution.
Experience with network installation, administration and troubleshooting a plus.
