    Vital Link Inc.'s core business is in the fabrication, maintenance, and installation of jet engine test facilities and sound suppression systems. This requires that the corporation support both field and plant operations, while operating both in a commercial and military environment on a worldwide basis. The Welder in general shall be responsible for ensuring that all assemblies and parts are properly welded and delivered to the painting/shipping department for processing.

    PARTICULAR DUTIES:

      1. Analyze shop and design drawings in detail and determine the best methods for shop assembly of complex weldments particularly structural both heavy and light to include structural shapes such as plate, sheet metal, flat bar, angle iron, channel iron, wide flange, I beams, various tube shapes and bar shapes, etc.

       

      1. Promptly report any design or detail errors or problems that are discovered to the Shop Supervisor or Plant Manager for drawing interpretation and possible drawing corrections.

       

      1. Direct the work of helpers and teach them fitting methods and techniques in process.

       

      1. Be able to effectively communicate any problems with design and shop drawings to shop and production control managers, as well as the design drafters and engineers.

       

      1. Ensure that assemblies are fit together in accordance with the shop drawings and cut sheets, including proper dimensional control and tolerances. Ensure that appropriate tack welding and bracing is accomplished to maintain fit up prior to weld out.
      1. Using equipment such as overhead cranes, forklifts, come-a-longs, hydraulic jacks, and rigging equipment such as chains, shackles, and nylon straps, determine the best ways to safely lift heavy steel components into place to fit and weld out.

       

      1. Design and build shop fixtures for the assembly of weldments to within design tolerances.
      1. Coordinate any necessary rework components or materials with the Shop Supervisor and Prefabrication Department as required.
      1. Determine the best methods to preform rework of items as directed by the Shop Supervisor.
      1. Ensure that all steps, inspections, and other instructions as shown on the work control travelers or routers are followed and documented, and that material and part identification is maintained.
      1. Coordinate with the Pre-Fabrication Supervisor on a regular basis regarding the scheduling and availability of component parts and materials in order to fitup weldments in a timely manner.

       

      1. Ensure that appropriate safety practices, equipment, and gear is used.
      1. Ensure that all problems with equipment and machinery used are promptly  reported to the Maintenance Department for corrective action. Halt production on equipment and machinery if they cannot be safely operated.
      1. Responsible to ensure that in the fit up area, equipment, tools, jigs, and supplies are kept in a neat and orderly manner.

    SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: This position will perform other duties as required by management when fitting duties are not available.

    SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:  Must be able to proficiently read and interpret fabrication drawings and specifications and know all the many methods and techniques to effectively assemble VLI product weldments.  Must be able to effectively communicate the requirements of these instructions to the coworkers, managers, and engineers.   This position requires the physical capability to perform assembly and fitup work as well as leadman duties, including moderate to heavy lifting. Position requires strong experience and knowledge of steel and sheet metal fabrication and welding, specifically the operation of welders and hand tools. Also requires the ability to read fabrication drawings/cutsheets, devise jigs and jig tables, sequence and layout.
