    Steuben County is seeking dedicated and service-driven attorneys to fill multiple roles across Criminal Court and Family Court practice areas in the Public Defender’s Office and in the Department of Social Services. These positions offer a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful public sector legal work, whether through courtroom-focused criminal litigation or client-centered family advocacy impacting children and families.

    Attorneys in Criminal Court roles will participate in high-volume, fast-paced litigation, handling prosecutions or defense matters and gaining significant trial and courtroom experience. Family Court roles focus on sensitive and complex legal matters, including child welfare and family services, offering the opportunity to make a direct and lasting impact on the well-being of individuals and families in the community.

    Available positions include Assistant and Senior-level roles within the Public Defender’s Office and Department of Social Services. Candidates will be considered for positions that best align with their experience and interests.

    The ideal candidate will be admitted to the New York State Bar and bring relevant experience in criminal and/or family law, along with strong litigation, advocacy, and communication skills. A demonstrated commitment to public service, ethical practice, and client-centered representation is essential.

    The position offers a full salary range of $78,219 - $122,334 (starting wage of up to $89,000), along with a comprehensive benefits package, participation in the New York State Retirement System (NYSRS), and potential eligibility for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). Full-time and part-time arrangements may be considered for highly qualified candidates.
