Document Drafting Are you an organized, detail-oriented self-starter with a passion for legal research and persuasive writing? Do you excel at strategizing a case and crafting comprehensive, compelling legal documents that guide decision-makers to the answer "yes"? Are you excited by the prospect of working predominantly on the written elements of legal cases, with minimal direct client interaction, and leveraging cutting-edge AI tools in your daily work? If you are a talented researcher and writer who thrives on deep dives into legal issues, meticulously building a case on paper, and embracing structured workflows enhanced by technology, then read on. Please read this entire announcement carefully. Political Asylum Lawyers, a Houston-based law firm, is hiring an Associate Attorney to join our specialized Asylum Case Architects team, which leads the representation until it’s time for preparing the client for, and representing them in, their hearing or interview. Is our law firm the right fit for you? Please only apply if you can fully commit to supporting our mission of helping immigrants secure their future in the United States through asylum. This is a fully remote position; you can work from anywhere in the world, provided you have a quiet workspace, fast internet, and the discipline to stay on task without close supervision. A core aspect of this role involves working with Artificial Intelligence (AI), including large language models (LLMs) and other advanced software tools. We have established efficient workflows for each project, and you will be expected to follow these pre-defined processes precisely. This is a role for someone who thrives within clear guidelines and is eager to optimize their work through technology. However, we absolutely welcome and encourage your creativity in crafting clever legal arguments and advocating effectively in writing. You’ve got to be detail-oriented and able to work under pressure, meeting deadlines and producing top-notch work. You also need to take initiative, acting boldly to further clients’ and the firm’s interests without being asked to do so. To be clear, the work is at times intense: we’re doing important - in some cases, life-or-death - work for clients, sometimes on compressed timelines, and we’re serious about promoting a culture of excellence in all that we do. You will likely work more than 40 hours per week, but not much more than that. There are no billable hours, and we don’t push our attorneys into the 50- or 60-hour weeks that are common at other law firms. If you’re liking what you’ve read so far, and you’re passionate about supporting people who truly need the best help possible as they face a crisis, then you’ll find working at Political Asylum Lawyers to be immensely rewarding. Our work changes lives. Our team takes immense pride in the role we play, through our advocacy and the strength of our documentation, in helping immigrants get safety, stability, and freedom. Also, working here also means a chance to cultivate skills that will serve you for the rest of your career, as we prioritize training and professional development. Responsibilities: What you will do You will be the architect of clients' written cases, responsible for ensuring that all applications and supporting documents are nothing short of outstanding. This is the perfect job for someone who loves to research and write, and who loves thinking through the strategy for framing a case and crafting a support packet that serves as a road map for helping the decision-maker get to the answer "yes" in the easiest way possible. Your primary responsibilities will include:Drafting Asylum Applications: Meticulously preparing comprehensive asylum applications, with a focus on the substantive responses. (Paralegals take the lead on the non-substantive portions of the application.) • Crafting Declarations: Developing precise and impactful client and witness declarations. Paralegals provide a draft, but you make it shine. • Compiling Evidence: Organizing and presenting evidence effectively to support cases. Again, paralegals do a portion of the work here, but you’ve got to make sure it all serves the client, and that we’ve sought the most helpful evidence possible. • Writing Legal Briefs: Producing compelling legal briefs and memoranda. You’ll write some briefs from scratch, while some will come to you with portions drafted by paralegals. You have ultimate responsibility for making everything come together in a compelling final form. • You will collaborate closely with legal assistants and paralegals on these tasks. Direct client engagement will be very rare; your focus will overwhelmingly be on the documents themselves. In the rarest of circumstances, you may be asked to assist with client preparation or representation, but this will not be a primary function of your role. You will work extensively with AI, LLMs, and other specialized software to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and strategic depth in your document preparation. Adherence to our set workflows for each project is paramount. You may also be asked to supervise paralegals and/or other attorneys. What you will get Salary commensurate with experience, but above market norms. Pay may increase quickly if you’re a great fit for the firm and do an outstanding job. We offer a best-in-class benefits package, including 100% of premiums covered for a top-notch health insurance plan. We also offer dental and vision insurance, and 401(k) matching. You will receive four weeks of vacation annually. Additionally, all employees are off work on all U.S. federal holidays (11) and the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. Opportunities for professional development abound - we love providing time and resources for our employees to acquire and develop skills. Find a workshop, conference, or other activity that will make you a better asylum lawyer or enhance your proficiency with legal technology, and we’ll be happy to send you. How to apply To apply, follow the prompts in the software program where you’re viewing this announcement. You must upload a cover letter and resume in PDF format. Your application won’t be considered without a cover letter. Your cover letter should explain why you’re uniquely qualified for this particular position and why you would be a great fit for our law firm. Generic, copy/paste cover letters will be discarded.
