The Department of Sociology and Anthropology in the St. John’s College of Arts and Sciences at St. John’s University is seeking applicants for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor, to begin in Fall 2021. The Department of Sociology and Anthropology offers a master’s program of Criminology & Justice to a diverse body of students as well as undergraduate and graduate M.A. level programs in Sociology, and undergraduate programs in Anthropology and Social Work. The Department’s faculty are highly devoted to students while maintaining an active research agenda and presence in the regional, national and international academic community; moreover, faculty is committed to antiracist scholarship and practices. The Criminology & Justice M.A. program at St. John’s has a global, critical, and interdisciplinary perspective. Combining theory and practical application, the program is invested in develop students’ critical thinking and analytical skills necessary for further graduate study, research or teaching, policy research and practice, and employment in government departments, criminal justice agencies, legal settings, and nonprofit organizations. Alumni of the program hold positions in a variety of professional arenas and attend top tier doctoral programs and law schools. Responsibilities
As a tenure-track Assistant Professor, the new hire is expected to maintain an active record of publications and scholarship, teach a variety of Criminology courses at the graduate and undergraduate level, advise students, and contribute to the continued growth of the Criminology & Justice Program and the development of the department, college and university community.
Qualifications
Applicants for the tenure-track Assistant Professor position should hold a PhD in Criminology or Sociology from an accredited institution at the time of appointment (Fall 2024). The areas of expertise are open, with preference for the following: Digital Criminology, Policing at the Intersections of Gender & Race, Conviction & Rehabilitation, Critical Race Criminology, Decolonization Criminology, Feminist Criminology, Convict Criminology, and/or Restorative Justice & Peacemaking Criminology. A demonstrated record of research and publications, and a genuine interest in teaching, student mentoring and service are preferred.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $75,000 - $81,000. St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
