  • Responsibilities

    Position Summary:

    Maintains the settings and operations of all voltage regulating and power factor correcting equipment in substations and on distribution lines. Ensures quality of voltage delivered to all OG&E Industrial, Commercial, and Residential customers including interconnects with other utilities and municipalities. Investigates and resolves voltage complaints, radio interference complaints and phone interference from local phone companies.

    Primary Duties:

    • Members in the apprentice program perform duties related to the craft and consistent with their achieved level within the program which may include:
    • Maintain the proper settings and parameters of substation Load Tap Changer (LTC's) controls ensuring the proper voltage output to customers.
    • Investigates substation voltage problems, phase balance and power factor conditions using complex, sensitive and high voltage metering instruments.
    • Assist Substation personnel with troubleshooting various equipment issues within the substation.
    • Maintains settings and operations of Capacitor controls of various voltages on the electrical distribution system.
    • Plans and executes error-free switching of distribution lines for maintenance, emergency repair, and circuit restoration in a safe and professional manner.
    • Installs and maintains proper settings on Voltage Regulator control panels in substations and on the electrical distribution system.
    • Performs troubleshooting and outage restoration duties called on by the Control Center. Also verifies circuit configurations and makes recommendations to change circuit configurations.
    • Maintains complete and accurate records of all voltage and interference complaints for future reference required for state regulating commissions, the FCC, OG&E and customer information folders.
    • Works with phone utility companies to resolve line interference and power influence issues that may cause noise on the phone systems.

    Requirements:

    • Associate's Degree in a Technical Discipline (e.g., Electronics, Electrical/Engineering Technology, Computer Technology) combined with One (1) year direct work related journey-level experience (e.g., Lineman, Maintenance Technician, Relay Technician, Trouble Technician, Voltage Technician); OR High School Diploma / GED  combined with Four (4) years direct work related journey-level experience (e.g., Lineman, Maintenance Technician, Relay Technician, Trouble Technician, Voltage Technician), OR High School Diploma / GED and equivalent combination of Three (3) years Military training and experience (electronics/electrical/engineering) combined with One (1) year direct work related journey-level experience (e.g., Lineman, Maintenance Technician, Relay Technician, Trouble Technician, Voltage Technician).
    • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with DOT certification required within 90 days.
    • Valid State Driver's License required for positions located outside of the Metro District.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical principles, substations and distribution systems.
    • Demonstrated ability to adopt and practice IIF (Incident and Injury Free) philosophy.
    • Demonstrated knowledge and adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), company policies, safety requirements and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in speech and writing.
    • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively and professionally with team members, leaders, and customers.
    • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve electrical distribution system issues effectively.
    • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks.
    • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently under minimal supervision.
    • Computer skills with working knowledge of MS-Office Suite (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel).

    Working Conditions:

    • Required to work non-standard work schedules and to respond to emergencies including overtime, weekends, holidays, on-call and call- outs.
    • Requires travel.
    • Required to permanently reside within 30 minutes driving time to assigned service center.
    • May be required to work at heights up to and exceeding thirty (30) feet, underground.
    • Requires exposure to extreme conditions and inclement weather.
    • Maintain or obtain all required certifications (e.g., forklift, advanced switching, confined space certification) and successfully complete required training (e.g., aerial device ? Metro District).
    • Work may also be performed in a repair/test lab facility.
    • Work involves exposure to high voltage and potentially hazardous facilities and equipment.
