JMT, currently ranked #54 on Engineering News-Record’s list of the Top 500 Design Firms.   JMT is seeking a Construction Auditor to conduct, perform and/or verify construction inspection(s) of various types of buildings under construction at LGA and JFK in Queens, New York and other facilities as required. The Construction Auditor will be based at one of the airports but may have to occasionally go to the Authority's offices at 2 Montgomery Street, Jersey City, New Jersey, unless otherwise directed by the Authority. The New York City Building Department has no direct authority at Port Authority facilities; however the Authority is committed to following the NYC Building Code. THE AUDITOR WILL BE REQUIRED TO SIGN OFF ON THE CONSTRUCTION WORK TO ENABLE THE AUTHORITY TO ISSUE THE CERTIFICATE OF OCCUPANCY.    

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Review Design Drawings and Specifications of the proposed construction prior to completing the inspections
    • Perform construction inspections to ensure construction is in accordance with the Design Drawings, Specifications and applicable Construction Codes. This includes attending controlled inspections
    • Review construction records at various construction sites to ensure inspections by others were completed and properly documented. This includes work by the Authority’s Resident Engineer staff on their own structures. The review of construction documents may include daily narratives (work reports), controlled inspection reports, requests for information, daily time and material records, certified payroll, change order requests and estimates as well as documentation of unit price work
    • Write reports of findings to identify incomplete construction, non-conforming items (in terms of Design drawings, specifications and construction codes), or work not constructed in accordance with the Design drawings and Specifications
    • Must have the ability and confidence to make decisions and operate independently with only occasional queries to the Montgomery Street office
    • Perform other related duties as assigned

    Required Skills

    • Interpersonal and effective communication skills, both oral and written, including knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook

    Required Experience

    • A Civil Engineering degree and/or registration in the State of New York as a Professional Engineer is desirable (or if registered in another state, the ability to obtain registration in New York within six months).
    • A minimum of 10 years of experience and understanding of engineering disciplines related to building design and construction; and in addition, a general knowledge of Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing work in buildings.  AUDITOR WILL BE REQUIRED TO APPROVE WORK DONE BY THE VARIOUS BUILDING TRADES AND SUB-CONTRACTORS.  The only exceptions will be the inspection of   Fire Protection systems and the inspection of elevators and escalators. The Authority will provide the specialized staff to make these inspections.
    • Knowledge of the applicable building codes and other related regulations, and applicable reference standards; such as the New York City Building Codes

     

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    The work environment characteristics are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job on an active construction project. Client will provide a trailer located near the site.

    Work is performed within a general office environment part of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment

    Field work is also required where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed.
