    Professors Jim Elser and Matt Church at the University of Montana and the Flathead Lake Biological Station seek to fill two postdoctoral research associate positions to work on a newly-funded NSF Rules of Life project entitled “The Rules of Life were made to be broken - Connecting Physiology, Evolutionary Ecology, and Mathematics to Identify a Growth Rate Rule”.  These postdoctoral researchers will perform studies of the genomic, physiological, ecological, and evolutionary responses of Pseudomonas and Chlamydomonas in chemostat cultures. The overall goal is to establish the conditions under which a close coupling of growth rate, RNA allocation, and C:N:P stoichiometry occurs or does not occur and to examine the ecological consequences of that coupling/decoupling. Work will be supported by a full-time technician and done in collaboration with similar studies of Daphnia (at Oklahoma State University) and with mathematical modelers (at Arizona State University).  The postdoctoral scholars are expected to publish these findings in journals and work collaboratively with FLBS scientific staff and collaborators at other institutions.

     

    Located on the eastern shore of one of North America's largest lakes, FLBS is a modern ecological research and education facility adjacent to Glacier National Park in the heart of the Crown of Continent ecoregion. Research foci at FLBS include limnology of Flathead and other large river-lake systems; water quality and supply in changing landscapes; ecological stoichiometry; systems ecology and modeling of large river ecosystems; microbial ecology; nutrient limitation and biogeochemistry; biodiversity conservation; evolutionary biology of animal, plant, and microbial taxa; ecology of invasive species; remote sensing of climate-mediated landscape change; and integration of social and ecological processes in a systems framework. Major FLBS facilities are recently remodeled and fully equipped for on-site research and education.

     

    Position Details

    • The position is a full-time Letter of Appointment and includes a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package (i.e., MUS health insurance benefits, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program).

     

    Required Skills

    • PhD in ecology, ecophysiology, or evolution of microbes or relevant areas in limnology, oceanography, biogeochemistry
    • Ability to write and publish papers, use and manage large databases, and communicate with others
    • Demonstrated experience with chemostat culturing of microorganisms
    • Knowledge of methods of analysis of genomics and transcriptomics

     

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience with methods of experimental evolution
    • Understanding of principles of biological stoichiometry
    • Good supervisory skills
    • Ability to manage several projects of a highly complex nature simultaneously
    • Ability to actively participate in professional development
    • Willingness to assist with the daily administration of the laboratory (lab safety, orderliness, supplies)
    • Willingness to assist with grant reporting
