    SUMMARY:

    The Metrology Engineer is responsible for engineering verification of calibration procedures/techniques used to verify dimensional, physical/mechanical and electronic standards and test equipment at NSWC Dahlgren’s Calibration Laboratory.  The engineer also interprets system requirements and adopts existing standards and facilities to new calibration requirements.  The individual provides technical and administrative guidance in the preparation of a variety of metrology directives, including Instrument Calibration Procedures (ICP), Metrology Engineering Reports, Quality Manual, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Engineer will also be required to calibrate general equipment from time to time to assist with workload and to keep skills sharp.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Conduct engineering investigations/evaluations, calculations, and preparing final designs of measurement systems necessary to:

    • Prepare/Document new calibration/measurement procedures for RDT&E precision measurement equipment
    • Correct deficiencies in existing calibration procedures
    • Create new and unique measurement systems for NSWC Dahlgren
    • Correct deficiencies in existing test and measurement systems (TAMS)
    • Prepare uncertainty budgets to properly account for calibration and testing error sources

    Communicate and coordinate with personnel at NAVAIR, NAVSEA, commercial calibration labs, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for the following purposes:

    • Maintaining and improving calibration lab capabilities
    • Supporting Navy measurement assurance programs

    Provide metrology technical advice, engineering services and calibration support to the NSWCs

    Develop computer programs to automate calibration calculations and measurements

    Document computer hardware and software configurations in accordance with ANSI/ISO/IEC 17025:2005

    Required Skills

     

    QUALIFICATIONS - EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND LICENSURE:

     

    REQUIRED:

     

    • All of the following:
      • BS degree in a related field (Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering)
      • Preferably have hands on experience in the field of metrology and calibration and/or experience in naval precision measuring equipment.

     

     

    PREFERRED:

     

    • ANSI/ISO/IEC 17025:2005 accreditation experience.

     

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

     

    • Strong written and oral communication skills
    • Knowledge of the Navy Metrology and Calibration (METCAL) Program
    • Familiarity with Metrology and Calibration Programs in an operation of similar size/complexity
    • Detail oriented and quick learning skills.

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Near visual acuity to review written documentation; ability to hear and understand speech at normal room levels and on the telephone; manual dexterity to operate a telephone and keyboard; lift horizontally and vertically.  Assignment may require travel and work assignments at other locations.  Travel may be of durations of a week or more and require air travel.
