    SUMMARY:

     

    The Public Affairs/Media Relations Specialist 2 reports to the Diplomatic Security Public Affairs Director and Deputy Director. This position provides support to the Office with regard to diverse media relations, writing and editing, and special project support to the office’s internal and external communications programs. This position is assigned to the Diplomatic Security Office of Public Affairs (DS/PA).

     

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

     

    •  Supports and provides input to public affairs specialists in developing and implementing proactive strategies for delivering messaging to targeted internal and external audiences via digital, print and broadcast platforms
    • Responds to journalists’ queries, with approval from the Office Director or designee, for information or imagery as required, supports proactive media engagement efforts, and acts as after-hours/weekend press duty officer on a rotating basis
    • Drafts, edits and provides written products to include power point presentations, press guidance, speeches, talking points, social media and web content, articles, brochures, booklets, scripts, executive memos, and others as needed
    • Coordinates with graphic designers on special project, publication or digital design needs in support internal and external messaging
    • Assists in the creation and implementation of special projects and events from conception to implementation and after-action reporting as needed
    • Coordinates the Bureau’s press, speaking and publication clearances for Bureau personnel
    • Manages the office’s internal general mailbox, responding to queries and assigning messages to appropriate teams within the office and Bureau
    • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as the mission dictates.

            

     

     

     

     

    Required Skills

    PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:

     

    • Must be a U.S. citizen and possess or be able to obtain a SECRET clearance
    • Served as a Public Affairs/Media Relations Specialist 1 for at least 1 year or proven ability at that level
    • 3-5 years experience in governmental public affairs and media relations; foreign policy, international law enforcement and security experience a plus
    • Working knowledge of contemporary journalism standards, ethics, and techniques; newsroom experience a plus
    • Must be able to demonstrate a high level of writing, editing, and proofreading skills
    • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, work independently or with little direction, and perform in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment with rapidly changing priorities
    • Able to travel domestically and internationally as required
    • Ability to meet deadlines, and the ability to work across Department offices at all levels

    Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance. In addition, a satisfactory background screening, negative drug test, positive references and proof of identity and legal authorization to work in the United States and for TTI are required.
