    MEDICAL/SURGICAL UNIT SUMMARIES:

2E MEDICAL IS A GENERAL MEDICAL UNIT for patients requiring an increased level of care, including ventilators with some patients having multiple co-morbidities. A typical day consists of safety huddles, bedside shift report, assessing patients, using technology to deliver medications safely, and ensuring the plan of care is delivered to elderly patients and patients with respiratory issues. 2EMed has bedside and central station monitoring. The average patient's length of stay is 3-4 days and the variety of diagnoses will enable the RNs to keep their skills sharp. RNs on this unit will work with a diverse team and will have the chance to create great relationships with hospitalists and other providers as they continue to grow and provide the best quality of care to their patients.

While patients will have a variety of diagnoses, the RNs on 2EMed will need to continually prioritize all patients and tasks, utilize their assessment skills, have good communication with physicians and families, as well as have the ability to multitask, work with others, make quick decisions, and do whatever is needed for the patient, regardless of their role.

5B IS A NEPHROLOGY, UROLOGY AND GENERAL MEDICAL UNIT, caring for both surgical and medical patients, including kidney transplant patients. A typical day consists of safety huddles, bedside shift report, assessing patients, using technology to deliver medications safely, and ensuring the plan of care is delivered.

Patients on 5B will range from those with kidney stones to the chronic kidney patient, as well as patients coming from all over the hospital and some having multiple co-morbidities. An RN on 5B is responsible for a high volume of medication administration and will serve as a catheter resource for the hospital. The average patient stay is around 3 days. As patient turnover is high, the RNs will see a bit of everything and will learn to hone their skills as there is a broad range of diagnoses on this unit.

This unit team is multidisciplinary and the RNs on 5B will act as navigators for the patients and will need to have the ability to connect with difficult patients, and care for the chronically ill as well as the patients that might be harder to care for. RNs will also attend a transplant class after 90 days of employment.

3G IS A GENERAL MEDICAL/SURGICAL UNIT TO SUPPORT OR SUITES. This unit has all private rooms and is also a bariatric-friendly environment with the average patient stay of 3-4 days. An RN on 3G will see mostly post-op surgical patients and will be very involved in pain management for their patients. They will also care for some medical patients as well.

This unit provides a solid foundation for an RN to gain an overview of surgical patient care and become advanced in their skills as well as be very involved with councils and committees. 3G RNs will need to be able to gain good rapport with patients, recognize patient decline without a monitor as well as help manage pain control.
