  • Responsibilities

    Overview :

    Provides comprehensive nursing services including assessing patients, recording vital signs, medical chart updates, preparing treatment rooms for examinations, collecting samples, and administers medication (orally or by injection). Provides patient medication education as well as medication readiness assessments in a community health center.

    Communicates with others (internally and externally) to provide, exchange, or verify information, answer questions, to address psychosocial and medical client issues. Assists clinicians as necessary. Must be able to work in a fast paced team environment and motivated to learn.

    Duties and Responsibilities :

    • Interviews patients to collect and document medical and social economical information in electronic medical record
    • Provides patients with education
    • Executes orders written by the provider such as family planning methods, referrals, medications and immunizations, lab follow-ups, prior authorizations, and counseling
    • Assists with patient screening such as: taking/recording vital signs, heights and weights, and with the collection of lab specimens
    • Prepares patients and assists providers with medical exams
    • Assists in inventory management and control
    • Orders educational material as needed
    • Exercises independent judgment in planning and implementing daily activities
    • Provides cultural and socioeconomic sensitivity in dealing with clients/staff of diverse backgrounds
    • Manages medical assistants, and assures standards of care are followed for all clinic grant programs
    • Performs other duties as assigned; including special tasks involved in responding to an emergency event
    • Essential physical demands require lifting and transferring materials up to 25 lbs

    Education, Experience, Licensure/Certification and Skills/Abilities Related Requirements :

    • Currently licensed to practice as a Vocational Nurse in the State of Texas by the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
    • Valid Driver’s License, reliable transportation for occasional travel to other health centers
    • Three years of full-time work experience as an LVN in a hospital or clinical setting is preferred
    • Prior experience in public health, community health services, pediatrics, family planning, or infection control/communicable disease is preferred.
    • Possess basic familiarity with operation of a personal computer and data entry skills
    • Proficiency in patient education and administration of IM, SC, and intradermal (PPD) medications is required
    • Strong writing, problem solving, organizational and interpersonal skills
    • Bilingual in English and Spanish Preferred

    Continuing Education and Training Requirements :

    CEUs required by Licensure and/or trainings designated by the funding source.
