    Job Summary

    The Medical Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Laboratory Technician must promote good public relations for the department and Jennie Stuart Medical Center while maintaining patient/customer confidentiality. Testing personnel are responsible for performing the examination of materials or specimens taken from the human body to provide information or materials for use in the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of a disease or the assessment of a medical condition. This includes the preanalytical, analytic, and post analytic phases of such examinations. Expected to comply with the direction of the Section Supervisor in the department assigned. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served; Neonate, Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric. The Medical Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist applies and implements the philosophy, goals and objectives of Jennie Stuart Medical Center.

     

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    To maintain active certification with certifying agency (ASCP, AAB, etc).

    Maintains a positive morale and positive working relationship with coworkers.

    Promptly arrives for designated shift.

    Demonstrates confidence in learning new routines and methods.

    Assumes responsibility for continuing education requirement as required by certifying agency.

    Demonstrates the ability to set priorities.

    Obeys JSMC policies and procedures regarding patient care, with special attention to biohazard procedures.

    Performs duties in an independent manner with little or no direct supervision.

    Always practices and supports safety in the workplace by using PPE (lab jackets, gloves, etc.)

    Demonstrates competence in all procedures required in accordance with policy.

    Works as part of a team. Performs duties willingly and with initiative, shares information in effective communication, treats others with consideration, courtesy and respect, remains calm, works effectively in stressful situations, and demonstrates proper judgement and tact.

    Ensures supplies are available and notifies appropriate personnel when low.

    To perform laboratory testing, as assigned and authorized, per protocols/procedures.

    Performs testing in a timely manner.

    Maintains standards in STAT, Timed, ASAP, and Routine testing.

    Writes legibly and accurately, with complete documentation.

    Documents quality control procedures performed, as per policy.

    Documents preventative maintenance performed.

    Investigates abnormal results.

    Correlates test results with diagnosis and questions incompatible results.

    Correlates laboratory methods, procedures, and patient test results with age-specific population criteria.

    Calls critical results to caregiver within timeframe established.

    Complete work assigned during shift and leaves minimal amount for next shift without sacrificing quality of care.

    Follows through on tests or procedures left from a previous shift.

    Recognizes and performs duties which need to be performed, although not directly assigned.

    Completes all mandatory in-service and HealthStream education requirement before deadline.

    Assists in orientation of new staff members as necessary.

    Assists in training of students as necessary.

    Utilizes slow times to departmental advantage by filling in with office/clerical work, assisting other staff, performing general household duties, putting away supplies, and other departmental tasks and continually uses time to department advantage.

    Performs proficiency testing as assigned.

    Limits personal telephone calls.

    Other duties, as assigned.

    Is aware of how to access ER on call schedule to determine which physician to call for critical results after hours.

     

    Additional duties when assigned as charge tech:

     

    To be the first point of contact for laboratory issues when no section supervisor or laboratory management is in the laboratory.

    To oversee the work in all sections of the laboratory to ensure that results are being produced in a timely and efficient manner.

    To ensure the workflow within the laboratory is not hindered, attempting to solve any issues that are interrupting workflow.

    To be aware of on-call schedules for the Pathologist, as well as numbers for contact.

    To be aware of other contact information for section supervisors, as well as those in charge of other departments within the hospital (House Supervisor).

    To solve issues that arise during assigned shift and ensure occurrence management documentation and communication with section supervisors and laboratory management.

     

    Additional duties when assigned as float:

     

    You are not assigned to a specific department. This means that you may participate in shift handoff communication, but the person who is assigned to the department must be the primary handoff.

    To ensure breaks and meals are covered.

    To ensure department supplies are replenished.

    To ensure stock is put away.

    To assist with clerical items such as requisition review, blood bank charges, etc.

    To be the primary contact to resolve automated line errors.

     

    REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF LABORATORY SERVICES, LABORATORY MANAGER, MEDICAL DIRECTOR

    SUPERVISES: NONE

    SHIFT / WORK HOURS: VARIABLE WITH ON CALL RESPONSIBILITIES

    Required Skills

    REQUIRED LICENSES:

    Certified as a Medical Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Laboratory Technician (as appropriate) from a national accrediting agency.

     

    MINIMUM EDUCATION: 

    High school graduate or equivalent and must have engaged in high complexity testing prior to April 25, 1995, OR

    Bachelors’ Degree and certificate from a NAACLS-accredited medical laboratory training program, OR

    Associates’ Degree or 60 semester hours in a physical, chemical, or biological science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited college or university, and required experience by accrediting agency if acceptable to national registry, OR

    Bachelors’ Degree in a natural science and related experience from an accredited college or university, and required experience by accrediting agency.

    GENERAL:

    Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

    Excellent customer relation skills.

    Attention to detail and concentration

    Ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.

    Required Experience

    MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE: 

    Minimum of one year as a microbiologist preferred
