    LABORATORY PROJECT SPECIALIST (PROJECT MANAGER)

    Van Andel Institute is a leading independent biomedical research facility dedicated to determining the epigenetic, genetic, molecular and cellular origins of cancer, Parkinson’s and other diseases, and translating those findings into effective therapies. The Institute is home to more than 400 scientists and support staff that work in on-site laboratories and in collaborative partnerships that span the globe.

    The Institute’s Pathology and Biorepository Core (PBC) serves as the coordinating facility for the prospective collection of biological specimens and as a clearinghouse for the processing, storage, and isolation of analytes to fuel biomedical discovery at VAI and partnering institutions. The PBC also conducts scientific evidence-based practices to advance the field of biospecimen science.

    The PBC at VAI is working with the National Cancer Institute as the biobank for multiple national projects. To support these projects, WE ARE SEEKING A FULL-TIME LABORATORY PROJECT SPECIALIST (Project Manager).

    POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The Laboratory Project Specialist (Project Managers) will be instrumental in the oversight, coordination and supporting of both laboratory and clinical operations. This will include:

    • Work closely with program management to ensure goals and tasks for both internal/external organizations and projects are met
    • Will serve as the point of contact and facilitate communications with internal personnel and external collaborators
    • Monitor projects and create monthly, quarterly, and annual status reports, staff allocation reports, and other necessary project reports
    • Work with project staff teams in planning and scheduling project work
    • Coordinating the procurement and collection of samples from clinical source sites
    • Establish shipping schedules
    • Maintenance and review of regulatory documents, such as material transfer agreements (MTA) and IRB approvals
    • Monitor, verify and reconcile expenditure of budget funds; and may make recommendations and assist with preparation of budgets
    • Clinical source site trainings
    • Qualifications and Attribute

    QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES:

    • Bachelor’s degree, sciences preferred
    • Project management and/or clinical coordination experience
    • Motivated, committed, and possess strong Project Management techniques and able to work with Microsoft Project
    • Demonstrated skill, ability and proficiency with computer systems and databases
    • Ability to troubleshoot and analyze problems and have excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
    • Be a great teammate with a sense of urgency and ability to cope well under pressure.
    • Highly developed networking, relationship building and negotiating skills as you will be working with a diverse range of people and cultures and at a variety of levels

    REQUIRED SKILLS:

    • Candidate should have 5+ years of administration and support of an enterprise Active Directory and Linux/Windows server environment

    • Knowledge of basic computer hardware, including desktops, servers, storage, network switches, routers and firewalls.

    • Knowledge of enterprise solutions such as virtualization, backup, Citrix, monitoring, patching, and antivirus software,

    • Must have knowledge of IT business and information environments and be able to implement recommended improvements to the data architectures and networks in support of the business environments.

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills

    • Effectively communicate technical issues and status to technical and non-technical personnel.

    • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment, as well as work independently.

    • Must have desire to learn new skills and work with new technologies with a keen attention to detail.

    • Participate in audit activities as needed including review and remediation.

    • Ability to work after hours and on-call weekend rotation

    • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.

    • Exceptional customer service orientation.

    • Technical experience with systems networking, databases, Web, Cloud and user support.
